Hong Kong (CNN Business) First, Beijing slapped tariffs on American soybeans. Now, it wants to wean its farmers off them altogether. China has been facing a potential soybean shortage after it put a new 25% tariff on importing them from the United States in July, part of the escalating trade war between the two countries

China is the world's biggest buyer of soybeans, using them as a protein-rich feed for livestock such as pigs and chickens. More than a third of its supply comes from the United States.

Beijing's solution to get by without US beans? Give the animals less to eat.

One of the country's top industry groups this month proposed cutting the amount of protein used in livestock feeds, saying animals could get by with less than is required at the moment. The government-run China Feed Industry Association said a reliance on imported soybeans is creating a "bottleneck" for the country's farming industry.

(which are USA, Brazil and Argentina) in good condition in time. I guess it's cheaper to ship the unfrozen but bulkier beans. European countries and Japan also import animal feed - mainly soybeans and maize.

China's area is 9.6 million sq. km - 25% more than the 48 states' 7.7 million. But they have more than 4 times the US population.

Louisiana farmers are losing millions in lost soybean sales. Their response? "Have you seen Trump's stock market? It's booming."

My sister works for a small private school in ME. A fair number of her students come from China, I should say did. Her school is now working on getting some type of international certification so they can take international students from other countries to make up for the loss of students from China. I'm going to assume there are similar drop offs at other institutions.

about 2,000 now and they ALL want international students because federal money for local kids won't pay private school owner/leadership fabulous salaries.

shame for Americas 'soybean farms' to lose the "trade" with a country like China where the demand for meat has grown 80% in the past 10 years.

china has a growing middle class who can afford some 'extras' like meat because unlike the USA, chinas' middle class & their salaries are on the rise.

...will fill a lot of that market.
But gwad... the soybean growers worked their aces off for 30 years to gain access to Chinese markets, and Trump has destroyed that market overnight.

But as farmers certainly know... you reap what you sow.
