Melania Trump on Pittsburgh shooting: 'The violence needs to stop'

First lady Melania Trump responded to the shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue Saturday that left multiple people dead, saying “the violence needs to stop.”

The suspected shooter, identified in media reports as 46-year-old Robert Bowers, reportedly shouted "all Jews must die" before he allegedly opened fire at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill neighborhood.

Police spokesman Chris Togneri said that three officers were shot and police were clearing the building. The medical status of the officers who were shot was not immediately clear.

“Anyone who does a thing like this to innocent people … they should really pay the ultimate price,” President Trump told reporters before departing for a scheduled rally in Illinois, adding that the U.S. should “stiffen up our laws in terms of the death penalty.”
