Reports: Votes in Texas, Georgia are being changed at polls

Some early voters in Texas and Georgia have been reporting that their party selections on their voting machines have been switched to the opposite party, or are not selecting candidates at all, according to reports by ABC13 and USA Today.
Why it matters: Such vote recording problems raise questions among voters about whether their votes are being counted properly and whether voting machines are rigged.
Texas
In Texas, voter selections across both sides of the aisle have reportedly been changed. Votes for Democrat Beto O'Rourke have been switched to incumbent Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, while votes for Cruz have ended up selecting no candidate at all.
The problems stem from glitches in the Hart Intercivic eSlate voting machine, according to the Texas Secretary of State's office.

(13,485 posts)It's not human error like they said yesterday. Now it's machine error. The flipping sequence is also interesting. If a Dem vote is flipped to Rep and a Rep vote is not counted that means out of two voters it's 1 vote for a Republican and 0 votes for the Democrat. What a coincidence.
I'm sure we all realize that industry has a vast amount of working, usable and much more sophisticated computer equipment than what is being sold to us as voting machines. This is dime store technology they are using.

Can they turn in a vote manually, if the electronic way won't correctly register it?

(1,236 posts)My wife's vote was changed twice. She caught it both times. Told the worker there who said she must have selected the wrong box twice.
Cheating bastards.

(37,648 posts)Did the attendant do anything to fix it? Or did selecting it several times fix it? Did she vote straight ticket, or individually? I've always been uncomfortable with the straight ticket vote. So I usually click on each one individually. My own special paranoia, I guess.

(1,236 posts)after the second correction it stuck (or at least that is what it showed). The corruption the GOP has introduced into the voting process has wiped out all trust. Agree on the straight ticket preference.

(1,533 posts)The machines should have been verified before being put in service. As I understand the problem, if someone selects a straight ticket, the error occurs. Individually selecting each race works. That is the problem with direct selection machines, there is no way to verify a person's actions to test the machines.
I am an election judge in Minnesota. We use paper ballots, counted by a machine. Each machine is certified before it is put in use. 100 ballots are are run through the machine and the totals have to match what is on the ballots. This can be repeatedly done with the same ballots. A person touching a screen is not a repeatable series of events.
In any case, the people operating the machines during the election should have absolutely no way to affect the programming of the machine. Their only option should be to report it, shut the machine down and start collecting paper ballots.

(14,731 posts)This is why I do not vote a straight ticket but mark each candidate separately. No more straight tickets after this year. I think the repugs like this but I am sure it will not be good for them.

(7,358 posts)Problem is there is no paper trail with these touch screen voting machines. Once you select vote, you have no idea if that machine didn't flip those votes to Republican. So who knows?

(33,388 posts)Eliminate all machines except one to print a paper ballot in the voter's preferred language.
Paper provides a secret ballot -- only the voter can confirm it reflects the voter's choices.
Paper provides a verifiable election -- the entire public can watch the entire process from voting to tally without connecting choices to individual voters.
Machines trade verifiable elections for fast counts. Which is more important?

I also don' t know why our esteemed members of the press do not do the same. But I've grown so cynical of the MSM that I'm almost resigned to their ineptitude.
This part of democracy should be a given. The security of the vote. That should be the base line. Democrats are doing well at fighting other forms of voter suppression. But nothing about securing the basic numbers. So all that effort will be going to waste if the basic vote tallies are fudged.
