OWENSBORO, Ky. - A Kentucky dad found himself in hot water on social media with what most people would seem to agree is a poor choice of Halloween costume.
Bryant Goldbach dressed himself as a Nazi solder and his school-aged son as Adolf Hitler before going to a Trunk-or-Treat event Thursday evening. The news was first reported by WEHT Eyewitness News.
He later posted a photo of himself on Facebook and the backlash was immediate.
(SNIP)
Screenshots of Goldbach's Facebook page prior to his apology show slogans like "White pride doesn't mean hate," "Being liberal means being a hypocrite," and various stances against social justice issues such as the concept of "white privilege."

Herr Goldbach clearly was not simply trying to portray historical figures. He's in full SS regalia, including death's head on his cover. You just don't whip that up for Halloween.
BTW, if you look at his left lapel, there's a cross.
ETA: He lashed out on Facebook to blame the liberals for being intolerant. Frankly, I think being intolerant of morons glorifying Nazi is a good thing.
And these uniforms are not cheap--like $1000.

(1,414 posts)understand that words are meaningless, and symbolism has a far more powerful effect. I agree tho, his intention was to portray a historical figure, and that portrayal is one of intimidation.

(26,094 posts)I have a screen-accurate Mandalorian cosplay outfit, which is also not a Halloween costume. I know how much effort and expense goes into something like this -- this dude has actual fucking Nazi SS medicals, uniform, RING, etc. He is literally dressed as the USA's enemy.
He isn't even hiding it.
blugbox
(951 posts)That is not a halloween costume.
That is either an army/navy surplus getup, or a movie prop for closeup quality
Not cheap in either case by any means, and certainly not something you'd just decide to dress up as and drop that kind of dime for that amount of detail and accuracy.

(146,324 posts)I know exactly what my father would have told him: "My job was to shoot and kill people dressed like you. I had friends die from being shot by people dressed like you. You had better get out of my sight."
But, my father is 94 years old and barely gets around with a walker now. He would still tell that asshole would-be Nazi that, though.

(43 posts)He was in the first platoon to reach Dachau. Quiet guy, but got really agitated over Nazis. He'd even say, at the extended family Thanksgiving dinner table, that "Nazis are good only for killing" and "Don't tell me the Holocaust never happened. I saw it with my own eyes."

(43 posts)it was pretty terrible, as you might imagine. I had asked him before why there were no Nazis from Dachau at Nuremberg, for I had never heard of any.
He told me there were a few SS who were captured, maybe a dozen. The American troops executed some by firing squad. Others didn't get out that easily. My uncle told me the American soldiers handed out shovels to the survivors strong enough to swing them, and threw a few guards into their midst. About that, he said, "Remember, Nazis are good only for killing."
This was confirmed years later in a declassified film documentary, for some of it was filmed. I don't have the link. I don't want to see it again. My uncle was a gentle man who was exposed to horror and evil that was truly beyond his imagining, and it hurt him deeply.

I told her "He killed Nazis. It's a family tradition." She never got to meet him, but she still loves and respects him. She's a good kid.
In a way, I'm glad he died 15 yr ago; this is no longer the country he fought for

(14,985 posts)I get that people are concerned about kids being impressionable, a guardian's duty towards their minor wards, etc, but as noted above, that SS uniform represents a great deal more of an investment of time, money, and attention than the kid's costume. How deeply invested is this guy in his SS uniform? Evidence suggests a great deal.

(3,244 posts)Screaming at and threatening a 5-year-old is not okay, no matter the circumstances. That poor kid has no idea who Adolf Hitler was, what he did, or why dressing up as him is a horrific thing to do, particularly the day after a synagogue was attacked by a gun-wielding maniac. The kid is being used as a prop for his dad's lunacy, and is basically just along for the ride. He didn't choose to dress like that, so freaking out on him and threatening him is directing your fire at the wrong target.
That said, the kid's father deserves all the abuse he's getting and then some. You're goddamn right people are going to be "intolerant" of someone dressing up like an SS officer less than 24 hours after 11 Jews were murdered at their synagogue. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that "intolerance." You're free to dress up like a Nazi. We're free to call you a piece of shit. Hooray for freedom!
What an asshole.
Sunlei
(22,651 posts)Jedi Guy
(3,244 posts)Then I think they're wrong in doing so. Like I said, the kid has/had no choice in the matter, and has no clue about why someone would be upset about his costume.
Then again, this is an asshole asserting such, so it's possible you're right and the vitriol was directed entirely at the asshole. Not having been there, there's no way I can know which is which.
In any case, I can't imagine any situation in which it's okay to scream at and/or threaten a 5-year-old. I can, however, imagine someone being so furious and outraged that they did so in the heat of the moment. Anger can make people do and say things they would never normally do or say.
