Donald Trump cancels First World War cemetery visit because it's raining

Source: Daily Mirror (UK)

Donald Trump cancelled his visit to a First World War cemetery, where hundreds of American troops are buried, due to rainy weather in northern France.

The US president was due to pay tribute to the Americans who sacrificed their lives in the Great War 100 years after the conflict's end.

But the White House announced that Trump, 72, and wife Melania, 48, would not fly to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial in Belleau by helicopter.

It said their appearance at the military cemetery, north-east of Paris, had been cancelled due to poor weather and an American delegation would take their place.

Obama walks in rain-soaked cemetery of U.S. war dead
By Alister Bull
November 11, 2009

President Barack Obama walked in the rain among the graves of U.S. casualties from the Iraq and Afghan wars at Arlington National Cemetery and took an unscheduled detour into section 60, a thicket of simple white headstones, to mark Veterans Day. OBAMA/

Underscoring the poignancy of the visit, Obama was due to hold a war council later on Wednesday as he tries to decide whether to send thousands more troops to Afghanistan, where U.S. forces experienced their bloodiest month in October.

The president, accompanied by first lady Michelle Obama, bent down briefly at the headstone of 19-year-old Specialist Ross McGinnis, who was awarded the United States’ highest military decoration for valor, the Medal of Honor.

The first couple, bareheaded and ignoring the miserable weather, spoke and shook hands with visitors they found by the gravesides, one of whom Michelle Obama hugged.

Rouge Bouquet
by Joyce Kilmer

In a wood they call Rouge Bouquet
There is a new-made grave today,
Built by never a spade nor pick
Yet covered with earth 10 meters thick.
There lie many fighting men,
Dead in their youthful prime,
Never to laugh nor love again
Nor taste the Summertime.

For Death came flying through the air
And stopped his flight at the dugout stair,
Touched his prey and left them there,
Clay to clay.

He hid their bodies stealthily
In the soil of the land they fought to free
And fled away.

Now over the grave abrupt and clear
Three volleys ring;
And perhaps their brave young spirits hear
The bugles sing:
"Go to sleep!
Go to sleep!

Slumber well where the shell screamed and fell.
Let your rifles rest on the muddy floor,
You will not need them any more.
Danger's past;
Now at last,
Go to sleep!"

There is on earth no worthier grave
To hold the bodies of the brave
Than this place of pain and pride
Where they nobly fought and nobly died.
Never fear but in the skies
Saints and angels stand
Smiling with their holy eyes

On this new-come band.
St. Michael's sword darts through the air
and touches the aureole on his hair
As he sees them stand saluting there,
His stalwart sons:
And Patrick, Brigid, Columkill
Rejoice that in veins of warriors still
The Gael's blood runs.

And up to Heaven's doorway floats,
From the wood called Rouge Bouquet,
A delicate cloud of bugle notes
That softly say:
"Farewell!
Farewell!

Comrades true, born anew, peace to you!
Your souls shall be where the heroes are
And your memory shine like the morning-star.
Brave and dear,
Shield us here.
Farewell!"

The American poet Alfred Joyce Kilmer (1886-1918), best known for his work Trees, published in 1914, was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and educated at Columbia University and worked for the The New York Times. He joined the 165th Infantry Regiment, (Fighting 69th), one of four infantry regiments in the 27th "New York" Division of the American Expeditionary Force of WW I. He quickly attained the rank of sergeant, attached to the newly organized Regimental Intelligence Staff. He was encouraged to go to Officer Candidate School and accept a commission but he said he would rather be a sergeant in the 69th than an officer in any other unit in the Army. On July 30th 1918, while gathering intelligence for the regiment during the battle of the Ourcq, he was shot in the head. He was 31 years old, and is buried in France, in the Oise-Aisne American Cemetery. He had married the poet Aline Murray Kilmer (1888-1941) in 1908 and the couple had five children, two daughters and three sons.

When Sgt. Kilmer was killed in action, he and Aline had been married for only a decade; their children ranged from ages one to nine. Aline Kilmer never remarried; five lines from her poem Sanctuary are engraved on her tombstone:

There all bright passing beauty is held forever
Free from the sense of tears, to be loved without regret
There we shall find at their source music and love and laughter,
Colour and subtle fragrance and soft incredible textures:
Be sure we shall find what our weary hearts desire
