Philippine news outlet critical of Duterte hit with tax evasion charge
Source: The Guardian
Philippine prosecutors have said they will file charges of tax evasion against a news website that has been critical of the president, Rodrigo Duterte.
The justice department said on Sunday it found probable cause to indict Rappler Holdings Corp. and its president, the journalist Maria Ressa. The case could be filed later this week, the justice secretary, Menardo Guevarra, said.
Rappler called it a clear form of continuing intimidation and harassment and an attempt to silence reporting that does not please the administration.
Duterte had already banned a Rappler reporter from his news briefings after the governments corporate watchdog found that the organisation violated a constitutional prohibition on foreign ownership when it received money from an international investment firm. Rappler rejected the ruling.

(11,885 posts)The criminal trump and his family in charge and in the White House. That's exactly why trump is so desperate to make the department of justice to the Department of Trump Justice now. So he can use them as a weapon against anyone opposing him. McConnell is helping him set up his kangaroo courts to use like putin is doing for himself in Russia right now.

This is how the Dictators 'kill off' or "ruin" any opposition or media they don't like.

(21,650 posts)He hit the owner of the most critical cable news channel (C5N) with a tax evasion charge on an unrelated business (a chain of gas stations).
The charge was then multiplied by ten - but when the tax agency (AFIP) moved to collect the back taxes, Macri fired the AFIP director and blocked collection of said back taxes (around $250 million).
Why? To give the courts an excuse to force the sale of C5N to the Macri family (through a cutout, a former Macri Group executive).
It was so outrageous, even his pet judges blocked the move.
C5N, for their part, is still running despite the legal limbo they were put in. And despite their limited budget, they now have the top-rated prime time news program (Gustavo Sylvestre's Minuto Uno).
