Trumps to skip Kennedy Center Honors for 2nd straight year

Source: KYW1060/AP

NEW YORK (AP) — For the second straight year, President Donald Trump will not be attending the Kennedy Center Honors celebrating cultural achievement. Neither Trump nor first lady Melania Trump will be at the Dec. 2 event, Stephanie Grisham, the first lady's director of communications, said Tuesday. Grisham also told The Associated Press that it was "not likely" any new winners of the National Medal of Arts, National Humanities Medal or National Medal of Science would be announced before the end of the year. She said the remaining weeks of 2018 are "the busiest time of the year for the East Wing."

The announcement continues the Trump administration's unprecedented distance from the arts and science communities. No arts or humanities medals have been announced or handed out since September 2016, when Barack Obama was president — the longest gap by months since the awards were established in the mid-1980s. No science medals have been given since May 2016.

A former head of the National Endowment for the Arts, which oversees the nominating process for the arts medal, said he was dismayed. "The current administration's disregard for culture and scholarship, as well as presidential tradition, is an embarrassment," Dana Gioia, chairman of the NEA from 2003 to 2009, told the AP.

<...>

The absence of arts and science medals isn't because nominees haven't been submitted to the White House. According to emails obtained by the AP through the Freedom of Information Act, the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities have continued to duly solicit candidates for the medals and compile proposed winners. The White House traditionally approves and announces them, and the president presides over a ceremony shortly afterward.

he doesn't care.

Trump is stupid and without any manner of understanding of the arts. (much less science)

If it ain't covered in gold and a perversion of form, Trump won't like it.

And he knows it. That's why he refuses to attend, he's not really welcomed. Trump doesn't do culture.

If he did the nominations--it would be people like Hannity. Or Kanye West. In other words, this could be even worse. Anything he touches turns to shite. Better he not touch it.

he will be on his death bed, fearful, confused, crying like a baby, because he never learned one simple truth, the only way to get anything out of life is by giving.

My daughter, from Pittsburgh, brought her 5 year old son to visit me. I live in a small town 100 miles away. She wanted some peace and quiet for her job she had a computer-conference scheduled. It was Veterans Day and my grandson's school was down for the holiday. I took him to our library, went down the stairs, and heard a hoard of kids playing. It was a kindergarten class from our local school. I saw the look of joy on my grandson's face when he saw those kids. He threw his coat in the pile of coats on the floor and dove in to a Lego table. Before I could say anything to one of the teachers she said to me, he is welcome to join in. When my daughter made it back home from her visit she texted me and thanked me for watching my grandson. I texted back, no, thank you.

I never see Donald with his son Barron. Why doesn't he take him golfing with him? There are so many activities that I remember the Obamas included their daughters in while Barack was president. Trump will never understand that things, matter, is an illusion. I will never forget that look on my grandson's face.

In watching a childor Grandchild acomplish the most minor thing.

To watch a child enjoy themselves is the great joy in life. I have seen a few narcisstic people in my life and their ends are pretty sad.

Glad you enjoyed such a simple thing. I spent many hours baby sitting my Grandson because his Mother had to travel. Today in his second year of College he still knows he can talk to me.

Once more he decided to blow off the whole affair. Hearing that news, the honorees for this year sent up a collective Hurrah!!

He (tRump) has no idea how he will be treated in history, but the rest of us do. It is not a pretty picture of pResident and mrs. tRump. But is one they both richly deserve.

Can they both just go already?? It would be their greatest gift to the world.

Being given an award by Orangehole McLittledick probably wouldn't feel like much of an honor to people who have excelled in the arts.
