Walmart seeks refund from Hyde-Smith after 'public hanging' comment
Source: Politico
Walmart wants its money back from Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.).
The retail behemoth asked Hyde-Smith to return its campaign contribution after the senator praised a supporter by saying, "If he invited me to a public hanging, I'd be on the front row." Hyde-Smith said the statement was made in jest and denied any racial connotation.
Walmart responded to a tweet from actress Debra Messing pointing out that the company had donated to Hyde-Smith that it "completely understand" her concern.
"Sen. Hyde Smith's recent comments clearly do not reflect the values of our company and associates. As a result, we are withdrawing our support and requesting a refund of all campaign donations," Walmart tweeted from its official company account. The company gave $2,000 to the senator.

(36,540 posts)Hyde-Smith knew what she was saying. When someone spews their racist crap in the public sphere they deserve to be shamed. I hope the publicity helps her democratic opponent Mike Espy.
The runoff election is Nov 27.

(11,686 posts)who work to hurt people like their employees they would not feel like they need their money back from one. These people they vote for and support are the ones who are working to make it easier for corporations to screw their employees over. I do not believe that Walmart is really concerned about the actual comment but only their reputation.
