California teacher arrested for forcibly cutting boy's hair

Source: Associated Press

VISALIA, Calif. (AP) — A high school teacher in central California was arrested on suspicion of felony child endangerment after forcibly cutting the hair of one of her students while singing the national anthem, authorities said.

Margaret Gieszinger was arrested Wednesday after videos posted to social media showed a student at University Preparatory High School in the city of Visalia sitting in a chair at the front of the classroom as Gieszinger cuts his hair.

In a video obtained by KFSN-TV, the 52-year-old science and chemistry teacher is heard belting the "Star Spangled Banner" while cutting chunks of the boy's hair and tossing them behind her. The circumstances of what led the teacher to cut the student's hair were not immediately known.

After cutting the boy's hair, Gieszinger grabs at a girl's long hair before the students make a run for it out of the classroom, the video shows.

Since she was going to cut others' hair.

If she didn't have a breakdown...WTH?

When I read "She is a loving and kind lady. She is usually all smiles and laughs. This is not the Miss G. we know and love." in the article, I found it terrifying to think about. What must it be like to blink into this new persona?

We had an employee who was abusing pain meds and went off the deep end a couple of times before termination. Another was an alcoholic and just stopped showing up. A family member found them at home in a psychotic state.

Charters are such bullshit.

This person already had their teaching credentials suspended in 2016. For "immoral or unprofessional conduct."

Many places have public high schools on the grounds of community colleges and universities. PUBLIC.

It is obvious from her actions and the kids' comments she is mentally ill.

Here is the website of the school itself stating it is a charter school (scroll down)

(I'm going to barely resist my impulse to capitalize the word charter.)

The "Preparatory" was the tip off.

At least from the facts given in the story. It sounds like multiple students warned the administration there was a problem with her days before. I'd place the blame squarely on them for not intervening then as developing a mental illness isn't a choice.

The kid already has short hair. I'd have been afraid she was going to do more than cutting hair with the scissors.

This lady's cheese has definitely slipped off her cracker.

that the behavior was inappropriate, I'm not sure $100,000 isn't excessive. Yes, she assaulted a child but there wasn't any permanent physical harm. I would say it could be emotionally harmful but she's been suspended and arrested and probably won't be back at that school. I think $5000 or $10000 bail would have been more appropriate.

This woman needs some serious help. In the video she is off the wall. I am surprised the students didn't cut and run much sooner!

and stripping identity.

Add in the scary element of someone behaving so oddly while wielding scissors, which could easily or even accidentally become a weapon.

Glad the students made it out of there before the situation became worse.
