Beto O'Rourke raised over $80 million for entire Ted Cruz Senate challenge

Source: El Paso Times

AUSTIN — Democrat Beto O'Rourke raised more than $80 million throughout his campaign against U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, an ultimately unsuccessful challenge that has catapulted the El Pasoan into the national spotlight.

Both candidates submitted post-election financial reports to the Federal Election Commission that detail their fundraising and spending during the final weeks of the campaign. Cruz's total haul for the campaign came to almost half of O'Rourke's.

Cruz and O'Rourke both finished the race with small sums left in the bank. O'Rourke walked away with a mere $476,692, a small number considering the volume of his fundraising, and Cruz has $262,799 left in the bank.

Candidates like O'Rourke, who lost their race, are allowed to keep their campaign committee running after the election. The money he has left in the bank can be used to pay off remaining expenses for his campaign, or it could lie in wait in case O'Rourke wants to run for office again.

Beto is a proven fundraiser for the Democratic Party.

It's disgusting that it takes this kind of money to run for office. No wonder the fat cat donors own the politicians.

BTW, Ted Cruz got 400K less votes than Gov. Gregg Abbott, so that means Beto has crossover appeal.

In a state like that, publicly blasting Kavanaugh and voicing support for NFL kneelers definitely wasn’t the best thing to do. Sometimes ya gotta dodge the issue in red states.

I want someone real especially on issues that matter like police brutality especially in red states. Someone taking cowardly positions would have lost by 10 points and don't forget all the people that won under his coattails in areas he turned blue.

I have seen candidates hold shotguns and say "I'm not Obama" and still lose to Mitch McConnell.

Those two states are much deeper red than even TX, so no one was gonna win there with a "D" after his name. Had Beto ran there, the difference would have been even wider.

TX is a state where you have no choice but to go after some Republican voters. The only way to win there is to either swing their votes, or hope they stay home in large enough amounts to swing the election. Sure, there are about 45% of the state that will never swing and will stay red, but the other 10% will. Beto was excellent in getting out the Democratic vote, but he did not swing very many red votes at all. With those positions reversed, and taming his potty mouth, I think he could have won. He's very charismatic.

This is just a minor disagreement with you. I still like him for VP in 2020.

Just an example of a powerful Republican that came to mind.

Sandra Bland happened in Texas. He needed to speak out on the issue. It is a human rights issue.

And with Kavanaugh, he could have said "I haven't seen what the Senate has seen" wink wink and that would have been fine. We would understand, and he wouldn't lose any Democratic votes.

As for Grimes, beating a sitting Majority Leader in a Presidential mid-term year in a state where Obama wasn't popular was gonna be all but impossible anyway. Not sure if anything could have helped, unless allegations with underage girls somehow came out against him.

....the latest report. It shows that he had $70M at the time, so he probably has $10M more in receipts, but if that $476K is accurate that means he spent $20M in the final weeks?

I guess we have to wait until the final reports are posted on the FEC site.

But yes, he sure knows how to energize Democrats and raise money! AND, his campaign committee has given more than $4M to other Democratic committees.

My district, which as remained SOLIDLY Republican since George HW Bush was seated as this districts representative in the 1960’s flipped for Lizzie Pannel Fletcher. This ousted a particularly repugnant Republican John Culberson who smugly assumed he was back for another round.

There was a huge ground effort in our district to make this happen, and no small part of it was the Beto effect.

It was a purple tide...

Our county went pretty much 100% blue.

TX Dems picked up two state senate seats..(This is a big deal, after losing Democratic SD 19 to a Republican in the Sept special election)

We picked up 12 seats in the TX house. We're now 67/150 seats.

The State District Court of Appeals are now blue in about half of the districts.

Harris County voted out their Republican Clerk....

We aren't blue, but these pick ups will make the government run better.
