VA secretary praised Confederate president as a "martyr to 'The Lost Cause'" in 1995 speech

(CNN) -- Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert Wilkie praised Confederate States President Jefferson Davis effusively in a 1995 speech, calling him a "martyr to 'The Lost Cause'" and an "exceptional man in an exceptional age." ... Wilkie, who delivered the speech in front of a statue of Davis at the US Capitol during an event sponsored by the United Daughters of Confederacy, also said that while he was "no apologist for the South," viewing Confederate "history and the ferocity of the Confederate soldier solely through the lens of slavery and by the slovenly standards of the present is dishonest and a disservice to our ancestors."

Wilkie's speech, a transcript of which ran in the United Daughters of the Confederacy Magazine, reveals his belief in the "Lost Cause" theory of the Civil War, which portrays the Southern states who seceded as heroic and denies the central role slavery played as a cause for the conflict. ... A KFile review also found Wilkie attended a pro-Confederate event as recently as 2009, giving a speech on Robert E. Lee to a Maryland division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
....

Wilkie added Davis' "unbroken spirit" after the war served as a reminder to the southern people "that their cause was honorable and that all would be right in the end." ... Wilkie concluded his speech by linking Davis' fight to the fights in the Congress at the time, shortly after Republicans won the majority in the House of Representatives in the 1994 midterm elections.

"Once again the halls of Congress reverberate with odes to rugged individualism, state sovereignty, and contempt for the centralized super-state," Wilkie said in closing. "These are bloodless battles Davis could never fight but, they are no less vital for the future of American civilization. As our cities decay and our standards and spiritual traditions deteriorate, America is searching for a better way. Walker Percy urged us to look South to recover community, stability, and sense of place in God's order which we have regrettably lost. That is a tall proposition but it is certainly one Jefferson Davis would understand and certainly one for which he would fight."

Nobody with this attitude should be working for the government, much less holding a cabinet position in the "centralized super-state".

Today he would be run out of political relevance. Twenty-three years ago, I believe this was common thought with possibly a majority of “white heritage” in the South.

They are heirs to family that fought to continue slavery....not something to be proud of at all, but these same families sought honor in fighting for the Confederacy. It’s pretty much the only honor they can cling to.

Addressing a group of pro-Confederacy audience, I think it is quite common to expect another ancestor of Confederates to pay homage to their leaders. Today, totally unacceptable. Twenty plus years ago....very common.

are traitors themselves. Me thinks someone needs to be reconstructed in the old time, Thaddeus Stevens sense of the word.

since he has no healthcare or hospital management experience

What a douche. Several hardworking career VA executives have left the agency over disagreements with Trump's political appointees.

I'm suspecting they're trying to deliberately destroy the agency so they can privatize it.

Damned repukes all have a brother-in-law, a cousin, a nephew, a sibling, etc. who runs a company that would love to come in and take over government functions. They'd cost the taxpayer more money, pay employees less with far fewer benefits, and provide worse service. I've seen it before at our local school board, and our current strain of ratfuckers will do the exact same thing but on a far grander scale.

little can be done to persuade them either as the hate and bigotry is a part of their makeup.

He and I both graduated Wake Forest University in the spring of 1985 and are products of WFU ROTC. The difference is I was commissioned two years earlier, 1983, since I had six years of Enlisted Service. The other fact I is I served 38 years in the Army and none working in government.....21 years of Active Duty and 17 in the Army Reserve and NC National Guard. Now I teach high school and despise this administration with all my being. Plus it's really hard to keep my political beliefs and desires for a better country out of the classroom as my students work their way through World and American History. I've never told students my political party or who I vote for, but they are pretty astute and can figure it out. I don't remember the Secretary at all while I was at WFU, but the WFU Vet Chat group mentions him sometimes. Mostly Vietnam Vets talking, but there are some of us from other conflicts that wade into the conversations......I just want Trump and his entire cabal gone, an ugly blight on the America I serve and love.
