Judge orders Stormy Daniels to pay nearly $300,000 in legal fees to Trump's attorneys in defamation
Source: CNN
A California judge has ordered Stormy Daniels pay $293,052.33 in attorney's fees, costs and sanctions to the lawyers representing President Donald Trump in the defamation suit Daniels and her attorney Michael Avenatti brought against Trump earlier this year.
Trump's attorney, Charles Harder, had asked for a total of nearly $780,000 from the adult films actress -- $389,000 in attorney fees and another $389,000 in sanctions in a hearing last week.
In a statement, Harder called the ruling "a total victory for the President."
"The court's order, along with the court's prior order dismissing Stormy Daniels' defamation case against the President, together constitute a total victory for the President, and a total defeat for Stormy Daniels in this case," Harder said.

(62,444 posts)In all likelihood, the NDA case is going to be thrown out, since the defendants have already agreed to recission of the contract.
He's not even SEEKING monetary damages in that case.

(115,719 posts)in a case that's going to be dismissed because the defendants aren't enforcing the NDA? And aren't those fees being covered through a Gofundme campaign anyhow?
Am I confused, or is he?

(62,444 posts)I don't think things are going to end well for Mr. Avenatti, when all is said and done.
The Gofundme money is gone and the NDA case is, IMHO, likely to be dismissed based on my reading of the briefs currently up for the January 22 motion hearing.
OMG... I just watched the video above. He's gone.

(115,719 posts)The court actually reduced the fees requested by 25%, saying they didn't need senior partners and associates to do some of the research and writing, and awarded only $1,000 in sanctions. The Texas SLAPP statute requires an award of fees and costs to the losing party so the court had no choice but to grant an award, and did so by analyzing whether the fees and costs were reasonable. The court also said that the award of fees was sufficient as a deterrent from further such litigation, but because the statute also requires sanctions the judge ordered the payment of the nominal amount of $1,000.
Avenatti took a big risk by suing for defamation covered by this statute, especially where the alleged defamation, although offensive, was clearly opinion and not a false statement of fact. He's lucky that the court didn't assess significant sanctions as well as fees. He's trying to spin this as a victory but it wasn't. It also wasn't a total victory for Trump, either, since they got quite a bit less than they asked for.

(62,444 posts)On top of his chain of other fuckups, is his recently tweeted accounting of what HIS fees have been to Daniels, in the recent dustup over the Gofundme money.

(2,559 posts)Stormy and her lawyer have already served their purpose: Trumps former personal lawyer Michael Cohen has pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations involving Trump approved hush money for Stormy. This has set in motion an inexorable process to charge Trump with criminal behavior.
Also, I believe Avenatti has announced he will appeal the verdict... so this is not over.
