Beto O'Rourke narrowly tops wide-open MoveOn 2020 presidential straw poll; Biden is runner-up
Source: NBC News
An early straw poll of members of the progressive group MoveOn.org shows a wide-open competition for liberal voters in the 2020 Democratic presidential contest, with Rep. Beto O'Rourke narrowly beating out former Vice President Joe Biden.
The poll, obtained by NBC News, shows a plurality of respondents 29 percent either said they did not yet know whom they would support or wanted someone else not listed among the group's more than 30 potential candidate choices.
The most popular potential candidate was ORourke, D-Texas, who was selected by 15.6 percent of respondents, followed by Biden at 14.9 percent, and then Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., with 13.1 percent.
It's another sign of ORourke's surprising popularity among national Democrats and a potentially troubling indication for Sanders, whom MoveOn endorsed in the 2016 Democratic primary. That year, 78 percent of MoveOn members voted to back Sanders over Hillary Clinton

(6,679 posts)I like Biden fine, but I hope to have fresher options in the primary. If he were chosen I'd have no trouble supporting him in the general.

And it has Biden much closer to O'Rourke which is interesting.

Goes without saying, but I'll support whoever the nominee is, even if they don't "excite" me.

Oh yeah, I forgot about this:
Beto ORourke Hits Pay Dirt With Bernie Sanders Money Machine
The Democratic Senate nominee raked in $6.7 million and paid more than $2.6 million to former Sanders fundraisers.
Through his February 14 campaign finance report, ORourke declared that he has spent $2.6 million for online fundraising services to Revolution Messaging, a progressive operation run by former members of Bernie Sanderss 2016 campaign for president. ORourke told me that he paid no attention to the companys past clients when he hired them, only what the company and its people could do for his campaign.

(67,782 posts)...although they do some fundraising. According to O'Rourke's FEC filings, they didn't use Revolution Messaging for "Fundraising" (zero expenditures in that category) That $2.6 million probably was for digital advertising, their specialty.

(146,312 posts)MoveOn is not predictive of Democratic voters at large. This early straw poll is meaningless, even to MoveOn. 30% had no preference. "Someone Else" was the winner by a wide margin.
