Trump: 'Mexico is paying for the wall' through savings in new trade deal

Source: The Hill

BY EMILY BIRNBAUM - 12/13/18 07:59 AM EST

President Trump on Thursday tweeted that "Mexico is paying for the wall" through savings to the U.S. in new trade deal known as known as the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

Trump this week threatened to partially shut down the government unless he gets the $5 billion he wants for the border wall.

He threatened before a meeting with Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) that the U.S. military would build remaining sections of the wall if Democrats "do not give us votes to secure our country."

One of Trump's most popular presidential campaign platforms called on Mexico to pay for his proposed wall at the southern border, which Mexico has declined to do. Now, House GOP appropriators are considering a short-term, stopgap funding bill that would include the $5 billion in border wall funding Trump has demanded.

Trying to overwhelm the potential buyer with all these complicated numbers and such. We had one try this with us years ago, my wife and I cracked up. we are both very good at math and figurin'. My wife is like a human computer. She pointed out to him the tricks he was trying to pull before we walked out.

who shops single for cars, I get this each and every time. While I'm not a computer in the calculating sense, I have a steel trap memory and don't write anything down. They try to change numbers all the time or pretend they didn't say what they said. Then there's when they try to tell me what I said. Not gonna work, bucko.

since it was driven up last year by Trump supporters buying high rather than fundamentals.

I'm sure the Republican plan to fix all this will be more tax cuts.

My oldest brother's mother-in-law always had a hard time balancing her check book. My brother, a CFO at the time, would do it for her. A common mistake was when she bought something on sale, she would deduct the savings from the cost. So a savings of $20 on a $50 blouse, would be shown as costing her $10. She had multiple purchase where she had gotten 50% discounts and did not enter the checks into the checkbook, because it was FREE.

used to use a similar trick to convince her parents to buy more things. Rent on house costs $800 a month, she talks the landlord down to $700. That means they just made an extra $100 a month to spend fun stuff. I don't think it was a lack of understanding on her part, it's a philosophy. Saving money is actually MAKING money, because you otherwise would have spent it.

My sister and brother in law vacation down there and have made friends in the area. Their good friends are not Trump supporters and oppose the wall. They have pretty much found that nobody down there really wants the wall because the economy is too dependent on things on both sides. I guess people need to pay attention to what candidates stand for and not what gender they are or what party they are from.

Trump says trade deal pays for border wall, Democrats scoff

Doina Chiacu, Anthony Esposito
3 MIN READ

WASHINGTON/MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - U.S. Democratic leaders rebuked President Donald Trump on Thursday for saying Mexico will pay for a border wall through a new trade deal, while Mexico’s new president said the topic has not come up in his talks with Trump.

The Republican president vowed during the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign to build a wall along the border with Mexico to slow the flow of illegal immigration, and he has long pledged that Mexico - not U.S. taxpayers - would fund it.

In a Twitter post early on Thursday, Trump said that unspecified savings for the United States as a result of the renegotiated trade deal between the United States, Mexico and Canada would pay for the wall.

“Just by the money we save, MEXICO IS PAYING FOR THE WALL!,” he wrote.

One of them, House of Representatives Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, ridiculed Trump’s assertion on Thursday.

“What money? What money? ‘That money will be used to pay for the wall?’ The money that businesses make? What money is he talking about that’s going to go pay for the wall? It just doesn’t measure up,” Pelosi told reporters at the U.S. Capitol.

believe that if they used to buy something for $1,000 but with a 25% tariff they now have to pay $1,250 and that extra $250 goes to the federal government? I know that it isn't $250 because the tariff is on the price coming in, not the retail price but it was easier writing it this way. There will be businesses that will try to raise the price 25%.
