Sondra Locke, actor in Clint Eastwood films, dies at 74

Source: The Guardian

Actor starred in The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, before role in Eastwood’s The Outlaw Josey Wales

Sondra Locke, the American actor who was nominated for an Oscar for her first film before co-starring in six films with her one-time partner, Clint Eastwood, has died.

The actor, who was 74, died at her home in Los Angeles after a cardiac arrest stemming from breast and bone cancer, according to a death certificate obtained by Associated Press. She died on 3 November and authorities were promptly notified at the time. It is not clear why it took nearly six weeks to be reported.

Locke was best known for the six films she made with Eastwood whom she dated for 13 years. Their professional association began with the western The Outlaw Josey Wales in 1976 and ended with the Dirty Harry movie, Sudden Impact, in 1983.

Born Sandra Louise Smith, she grew up in Tennessee, where she worked at a radio station and appeared in a handful of plays before winning a nationwide talent search in 1967 to be cast opposite leading man Alan Arkin in the movie adaptation of Carson McCullers’ 1940 novel The Heart is a Lonely Hunter.

She was a good actress, but for some reason after her films with Eastwood people didn't take her seriously.

He knew powerful people in Hollywood. I guess just breaking up with her wasn't enough.

Eastwood may be a gifted film director, but he seems like an asshole.

Played the same type role in every movie with that monotone voice.

As a person, don't like him at all.

Eastwood's relationship with Locke (at the time, unaware of his infidelities[33]) ended acrimoniously in April 1989, and the post-breakup litigation dragged on for a decade. Locke filed a palimony lawsuit against him after he changed the locks on their home and moved her possessions into storage when she was at work filming her second directorial feature, Impulse.[53] In court, Eastwood downplayed the intensity of their relationship. He described Locke as a "roommate" before quickly redescribing her as a "part-time roommate."

Claimed that Eastwood insisted that she have an abortion - I don't remember what year this was supposed to have happened, tho.

working relationships have got to be hard. I have mixed feelings about Eastwood who is a lifelong fascist, doesn't quite fall into line with t-bagger fascism, more old school. I'm sure he is very arrogant, conceited, generally a prick in real life but I have enjoyed his films over the years.

She got taken advantage of, in the end, it seems like. But she had a good life. Success, love, children, pretty appearance, a comfortable existence I think.

Cancer is the scariest thing of all. We can't prevent it, even if we live healthy. It strikes randomly. I hope I drop down dead from a heart attack, or better yet, go in my sleep.
