LANSING, Mich. (AP) Gov. Rick Snyder on Friday signed laws to significantly scale back citizen-initiated measures to raise Michigans minimum wage and require paid sick leave for workers, finalizing an unprecedented Republican-backed legislative maneuver that opponents blasted as shameful.
To prevent minimum wage and earned sick time initiatives from going to voters last month, GOP lawmakers approved them in September so they could be more easily altered after the election with simple majority votes rather than the three-fourths support that would have been needed if voters had passed the proposals.
The tactic never done until now was pushed by the business community as necessary to avoid jeopardizing the economy. But it was criticized as an unconstitutional attack on voters will at a time Republicans in Michigan are trying to dilute the powers of incoming elected Democrats.
In another Midwest state, GOP Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker on Friday signed a sweeping package of legislation that restricts early voting and weakens the Democratic governor and attorney general.

(15,552 posts)but admitted voting for Snyder. The fellow employee was a really intelligent, well-educated, middle class man who grew up in the Lansing area. I gave him a lot of grief over his vote and I'm wondering now if he's learned his lesson.
Snyder and Scott - just pure evil. Talk about sour grapes! Snyder lost to a woman and can't stand it.
I'm sure the GOP in the legislature will try to pull the same crap they did with Granholm, who was a woman. I hope the three women set to run Michigan show them they won't be intimidated. Democrats in Michigan need to keep the pressure on.
Oh yeah, and why isn't Snyder behind bars? He and his emergency manager ideas killed people.

(51,627 posts)They are as bad as FL, NC and GA. The GOP must be destroyed, the sooner the better. Since they are more skilled at stealing, lying and cheating they will continue to fix elections since they sure do not know or care how to govern as elected by their citizens.
What is the best way to beat them? We vote them out but that doesn't work. Do we boycott them?

(1,332 posts)As a Michigander, I have always despised snyder from his squeaky voice to his lack of political knowledge and complete stupidity. He is a horrible governor and will not be missed. Apparently he is also a wholly owned subsidiary of the chamber of commerce which has way too much of a stranglehold on this state. The corruption of this state by the republican party is truly astounding. I find it interesting that a few years ago snyder sold his house and they bought a condo in downtown Ann Arbor, probably the most liberal city in the state. Right on main street, if I have it right. There were protest in front of the building during the Flint water crisis. I fully expect there will be more.I just hope Gretchen had fix the mess snyder is creating and leaving.

(6,231 posts)will be filed, but there is no guarantee that we can fix this. In other countries the newly elected take office the next day after the election. We need to end Lame Duck sessions.

(6,231 posts)why here in Michigan we hate the repubs. Even though Gov Elect Grechen Whitmer is a Dem and won, she will have to deal with the repub controlled State House and Senate. If what they pass is totally unacceptable, she will veto it. Lawsuits have been filed in other states who did the power grab and they did win on some of the power grab bills.
