A huge explosion and fire has hit a restaurant in the northern Japanese city of Sapporo.
Japanese police say 41 people were injured in the explosion, with one of them in a serious condition.
The cause of the explosion in the Toyohira district is not yet known. Some reports suggested a gas blast.
Images on social media initially showed flames rising from the area with debris all around, and later firefighters tackling collapsed buildings.

(182,949 posts)We just finished watching the first 8 episodes of the new Jack Ryan series. Highly recommend it but not for kids. This explosion looks eerily similar.

(33,643 posts)only 1 is in critical condition.
Unless the restaurant was closed, and those injured are nearby residents or pedestrians.
But if so, this was a pretty fortunately low casualty count.

(33,643 posts)Unless they were in a basement or closet, somewhere where the gas ... wasn't.
That is way to much damage and debris ... the first picture looks like two adjacent walls (the ones nearest the camera) were completely blown out, leaving only half the roof 'standing'.
I don't think anyone would've survived in the building, but ... I'm not exactly an expert ... perhaps we'll find out someday.
Hoping for a speedy recovery for all the injured folks in any case!

(7,539 posts)...The kitchen exploded and set the whole place on fire instantly and the worst injuries were flash burns to the staff closest to ignition. Diners were likely injured in the resulting panic to exit over debris before the fire spread completely. Sounds like it went as well as it could have. I'd guess the destroyed building photo was taken after the fire had been going a while after evacuation. The walls collapsing may have fallen due to prolonged fire and not the initial blast.
