Police identify 'persons of interest' after drone disruption at Gatwick
Source: The Guardian
olice have identified persons of interest in the hunt for the drone operator, or operators, who caused Gatwick to close for 36 hours, as services at the airport resumed on Friday.
About 150 out of 837 scheduled flights were cancelled after the runway opened just before 6am. The airport said additional mitigating measures put in place by the police and military were allowing planes to fly again. However, with planes and crews out of place many services remained cancelled or delayed.
More than 126,000 passengers were due to fly out on Friday, after 110,000 were booked on cancelled flights on Thursday. A first arrival from China landed at about 6am and the first departure, a Norwegian Airlines flight to Lapland, took off soon after.
The operator of the drone or drones had yet to be discovered, but no further sightings had been recorded since 10pm on Thursday.

Terrorists, pure and simple.

(1,204 posts)But I'm not sure I follow you on how this can be considered terrorism. Were they intending to cause disruption or harm to advance some sort of political or religious or whatever cause/message? I haven't heard anything that suggests any potential motives yet. Would it be possible for you to provide your information source that leads you to believe these should be considered acts of terrorism?

(3,150 posts)What other motive other than to cause disruption and/or genuine harm could ANYONE have for such a thing.
Throw the damned book at them.

(1,204 posts)And if their goal was to be malicious and provoke a response, does that mean it's terrorism by default? I'm not taking issue with your statement that they need to face punishment, but rather on the labeling it as terrorism. We can label every awful thing as an act of terrorism, but then we lose something in the meaning terrorism. Just to be clear, these folks could have very be terrorists and they were planning on doing something for some sort of political/religious/whatever statement. But we have nothing that suggests that's the case. It could have also been some idiots thinking it would be "cool" to get some video of them flying over an airport. Very stupid and very dangerous, but I would have a hard time saying they are terrorists.
Bastards should be TREATED exactly as anyone causing such disruption, through either malice or stupidity, would.

Flights at Gatwick have been suspended again due to a new "suspected drone sighting".
A spokeswoman for the UK's second biggest airport said: "We are just hearing a report of another drone sighting that we are investigating.
"As we look into it we have taken the precaution of suspending flights."
Aircraft have been circling above the area as they are currently unable to land. The sighting reportedly occurred at about 17:10 GMT.
The Ministry of Defence has not confirmed the sighting but Sussex Police said its officers were investigating.

Two people have been arrested in connection with the criminal use of drones which has caused widespread disruption to flights at Gatwick airport, police have said.
In a statement released in the early hours of Saturday, Sussex police said the arrests were made just after 10pm on Friday night.
The force has not disclosed the ages or genders of those arrested, nor the locations of where the arrests took place.
The airport was plunged into chaos on Wednesday night when drones spotted hovering near the runways forced hundreds of flights to be cancelled, delaying and stranding thousands of passengers.
