Parkland Survivor David Hogg, Mocked by Fox Host Over College Rejections, Finds Ivy League Comeback
Source: USA Today
David Hogg, the gun control activist and Parkland high school massacre survivor who was razzed by Fox News host Laura Ingraham after being rejected by four colleges, has found the perfect comeback: He's going to Harvard.
Hogg, a founding member of Never Again MSD, a gun control advocacy group, announced his plans Saturday on Twitter, where he has more than 900,000 followers: Thank you all for the well wishes, Ill be attending Harvard in the fall with a planned major in Political Science, Hogg tweeted.
Another survivor, Jaclyn Corin, a co-founder of the March For Our Lives movement, said on Twitter last week that she was also accepted at Harvard.
Hogg, 18, rose to prominence with his steely account of the horrific ordeal at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where a former student killed 17 people on Valentine's Day. A TV production major and son of a former FBI agent, Hogg coolly taped a real-time video of the incident on his cellphone from inside a classroom as the killer stalked the halls. -MORE...

Best of Luck David and Be Bold!

With maybe a WEE bit of compassion or empathy with human suffering. Like, say, the human suffering directly caused by surviving a gun massacre in your high school, and seeing your friends be mowed down and killed. I imagine something like that would inform and motivate your desire to change that in some way.

(32,645 posts)He's already done well as a public speaker and as a political essayist/commenter. I hope he finds his way to DU eventually too. Good luck to David and to all the Stoneman Douglas survivors.

(5,734 posts)This is a young man of such tremendous courage and promise; I am glad Harvard recognized a true leader when they saw one. Big congratulations to Miss Corin as well!
So proud of all the young people who spoke out after this tragedy and continue to speak out today.

(73 posts)a close friend and co-worker's stepson (half Japanese/half Singaporese) and near-perect SAT score was informed early on he wasnt acceptable. But, I love, love, love David Hogg and am glad to see Harvard make an exception for him even with his SAT score. Academics arent everything, and the school will benefit from his veryy unique and infortunate life experince. I hope any of his classmates who applied to Harvard get the same treatment.

(20,202 posts)GPA is better and Hogg's GPA is great. The iveys put a lot of value on student involvement in extracurricular activities and community service too. Hogg has no shortage there.

I used to work at NYU. It is not solely about your HS GPA. Good Luck, David!

(224 posts)With all this praise, we should also appreciate the path Harvard University has taken in accepting David Hogg.
All too often schools use standard criteria that doesnt always recognize the future of its students. Well done, Harvard.

This is EXCELLENT news! Frankly, ALL the big schools and Ivy League institutions should have grabbed him right off the bat. This kid has MASSIVE potential. Ive watched him delivering speeches, being interviewed, taking questions on the fly, and hes SOLID. Unruffled, fearless, knowledgeable, poised, passionate, and well-prepared. Hes articulate, forceful, focused, and clear on messaging.
I wouldnt be a bit surprised if he runs for something. I expect to be a campaign donor if he does. I wouldnt mind putting my money where his mouth is.
