Blizzard conditions cripple central U.S.; bitter cold spreads across region
Source: Omaha World Herald

Blizzard conditions engulfed the central U.S. on Thursday, leading to numerous road closures, crashes and at least one death.
In the storms wake, bitterly cold weather is forecast, which, despite a brief reprieve over the weekend, promises a frigid New Years Eve.
About 145 miles of Interstate 80 from roughly Grand Island to North Platte was closed in Nebraska for several hours Thursday while the storm howled and crews cleared crashes.
It reopened about 7:15 p.m. No severe injuries were reported.

(160,540 posts)That's no good at all.
Insane weather conditions on both sides of the state line. In K.C., there was a whole lot of rain, no ice, no snow.
Take every care of yourself and your wife, and stay warm.

(25,857 posts)and I got to spend the night in Boise City, OK. I'm still trying to decide if I should try to continue my journey in a bit or simply hole up for another day.

(9,724 posts)That is if you like it. Temps are going to be dropping quickly today down to about 35 by 5pm then into the teens tonight, high of 22 tomorrow. Mild, unseasonable temperatures over the weekend.
Thats the weather out of Oscoda. Bet youre a little south of that though.

(1,336 posts)It was a green Christmas here, but rain overnight, warm temps today and due to drop for the weekend. I pity the meteorologists -- their educated guessing abilities are being severely taxed!

(50,273 posts)We live near the top of a hill on a dirt road and a while ago a neighbor drove/slid by and finally came to rest in the middle of the road. He crawled back up the hill, but the truck is still sitting in the middle of the road with flashing lights. We're wondering if the sand truck or a crash will come first. Temperature is right at freezing so it should improve rapidly in the next hour or so. What a mess.

I would prefer snow to this flooding rain. Although I live near top of a hill there is standing water in the yard and water running through my basement but I have a good drain and we moved everything above harm's way. Furnace is on blocks with a concrete ledge so it stays dry. Amazingly, this is the first rain this year to cause basement water in my house, but we just reached record for most rain in one year with today's deluge.
