President Trump threatens to 'close Southern Border entirely' if Democrats don't fund border wall
By WIL CRUZ Dec 28, 2018, 7:47 AM ET
President Trump threatened to shut down the entire southern border with Mexico if his demands for more funding to build a wall aren't met.
Trump tweeted Friday that if "Obstructionist Democrats" don't give him the $5 billion he is asking for to build his proposed border wall he will "close the Southern Border entirely."
"We will be forced to close the Southern Border entirely if the Obstructionist Democrats do not give us the money to finish the Wall & also change the ridiculous immigration laws that our Country is saddled with," the president tweeted. "Hard to believe there was a Congress & President who would approve!"

The government has been partially shut down since last week over an impasse between Trump and Democrats over funding for a proposed security wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. The government shutdown, which has kept hundreds of thousands of federal employees out of work, is expected to extend into the new year.

UPDATE:
Trump Warns of a New Caravan Forming In Tweet Storm Threat to Close Southern Border Entirely
by Colby Hall | Dec 28th, 2018, 7:32 am
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.
One week into a government shut down that he had previously owned before blaming his political rivals, President Donald Trump is once again threatening to completely close the Southern Border of the United States unless he gets funding for the border wall that was the central promise made during his 2016 campaign. He also repeatedly promised that Mexico would pay for the said wall, but it appears thats not one of the promises made, promises kept. that underpins his 2020 campaign slogan.
In a Friday morning Tweetstorm, Trump not only threatened to close the border unless he got funding but also warned of a new caravan of migrants heading north to the Southern U.S. border. Word is that a new Caravan is forming in Honduras and they are doing nothing about it, Trump tweeted, without any sourcing of where he is getting this word.

If the threat of shutting the border sounds familiar, its because Trump tweeted a similar threat back in November:

(50,273 posts)After all hell breaks out his GOP enablers might have to wake up and do something to stop him. Trump is getting daffier by the day. There are more grounds to impeach him than there are in my just run coffee maker and he would probably qualify as a loony tune under the 25th amendment. Enough already.

(3,335 posts)If he shuts down the Southern border, that is more likely to affect the State of Texas than any other state. Good Luck with that. Looks like it's time to turn Texas Blue.

(7,142 posts)What does that mean? He will shut down ports of entry? Ports of exit? He is going to block the entire southern border with his fat ass? The idiots who voted for Trump have got to admit by now that they made a huge mistake.
Except for the Freedumb caucus and its followers, and Rand Paul.

That photo of Big Bend is amazing. I never pictured that part of the country to look so beautiful, always pictured it to be extremely flat there haha. Kinda like the one of the NM/MX border photo. I travel to NM to visit family, and that's pretty much the view for my entire stay there. Did you take those photos?? Either way, thank you for sharing!

(5,914 posts)New Mexico doesn't have the trees, lakes, streams, etc., that we would normally associate with the "beauty of nature", but there are some truly amazing vistas there. In my opinion, it has a beauty like no other state in the nation.

It is beautiful. Thanks for standing up for NM.

(1,732 posts)I wasn't trying to imply that NM isn't beautiful at all. I travel to NM at least once a year, mainly to the Santa Fe area, and absolutely love it there. It is quite beautiful with the vista's and mountain/desert landscape!! That and the fact that they have those hatch chiles that I gather every year and freeze!

(5,914 posts)What I love most about New Mexico, though, is the people that live there. New Mexico is a true melting pot of various cultures. The people there are kind.

Then Mara Liasson was on. Granted some of this comes from the White House but she made two interesting points:
1. The administration doesn't think Trump will suffer any politic fallout from the shutdown.
and then this...
2. For his base the wall is is vital and they take it very literally. According to her sources in the White House/Trumpians they don't think he can get re-elected if he doesn't get the wall.

Shillue started by saying that Democrats insisting well, well wait for Mexico to pay for it, is a loser argument. Then, after he was reminded that Trump did, in fact, say Mexico would pay for the wall, Shillue said this: It doesnt matter [that Trump said it]. The base didnt believe it anyway. They knew he was going to get the money other ways.
Chemisse
(30,813 posts)Trump says Mexico will pay in "other ways" or, recently, through the tariffs and they are happy to believe that.
I'm often reminded of Fox Mulder in the X-Files, who had a poster on his wall describing his attitude about UFOs, stating: "I Want To Believe."

If they give him anything , this tactic will be used over and over again from trump. Its also funny in 2015 President Obama was asking for 250 million for border security , and the Republican Congress wouldn't do it then, yet now want to claim its a crisis. Trump and the gop are liars. This is all a PR campaign away from his other issues.

(1,376 posts)So by "forced to close" presumably he's suggesting shutting down cross-border traffic into and out of the US in the international ports of entry (San Diego to Texas). If he did, the economic costs would be significant, given the realities of US-Mexico trade and the impact such an interruption would have on the US supply chain... it would be in the tens of billions per day, at least.
Interesting numbers:
[link:http://www.ustradenumbers.com/country/mexico/|
Of course, four of the five top ports of entry for US trade with Mexico are in Texas, and the top five U.S. exports to Mexico by value are Gasoline and other POL products, motor vehicle parts, computer parts, low value shipments, and computer chips, respectively. They accounted for 26.46 percent of total exports to Mexico.
So one wonders how happy the oil industry, automobile and steel industries, technology manufacturing industry, and transportation/shipping industries - and the state of Texas, among others - would be about this decision?
The other issue, of course, is that is DJT does this, it's undeniably his decision, and he gets the blame.
Go ahead, fatso. Make our day.
