President Trump threatens to 'close Southern Border entirely' if Democrats don't fund border wall

By WIL CRUZ Dec 28, 2018, 7:47 AM ET

President Trump threatened to shut down the entire southern border with Mexico if his demands for more funding to build a wall aren't met.

Trump tweeted Friday that if "Obstructionist Democrats" don't give him the $5 billion he is asking for to build his proposed border wall he will "close the Southern Border entirely."

"We will be forced to close the Southern Border entirely if the Obstructionist Democrats do not give us the money to finish the Wall & also change the ridiculous immigration laws that our Country is saddled with," the president tweeted. "Hard to believe there was a Congress & President who would approve!"

The government has been partially shut down since last week over an impasse between Trump and Democrats over funding for a proposed security wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. The government shutdown, which has kept hundreds of thousands of federal employees out of work, is expected to extend into the new year.

UPDATE:

Trump Warns of a ‘New Caravan Forming’ In Tweet Storm Threat to Close ‘Southern Border Entirely’

by Colby Hall | Dec 28th, 2018, 7:32 am

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

One week into a government shut down that he had previously “owned” before blaming his political rivals, President Donald Trump is once again threatening to completely close the Southern Border of the United States unless he gets funding for the border wall that was the central promise made during his 2016 campaign. He also repeatedly promised that Mexico would pay for the said wall, but it appears that’s not one of the “promises made, promises kept.” that underpins his 2020 campaign slogan.

In a Friday morning Tweetstorm, Trump not only threatened to close the border unless he got funding but also warned of a new caravan of migrants heading north to the Southern U.S. border. “Word is that a new Caravan is forming in Honduras and they are doing nothing about it,” Trump tweeted, without any sourcing of where he is getting this “word.”

-snip-

If the threat of shutting the border sounds familiar, it’s because Trump tweeted a similar threat back in November:

1. The administration doesn't think Trump will suffer any politic fallout from the shutdown.
and then this...
2. For his base the wall is is vital and they take it very literally. According to her sources in the White House/Trumpians they don't think he can get re-elected if he doesn't get the wall.

https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=11597368

Shillue started by saying that Democrats insisting “well, we’ll wait for Mexico to pay for it,” is a “loser” argument. Then, after he was reminded that Trump did, in fact, say Mexico would pay for the wall, Shillue said this: “It doesn’t matter [that Trump said it]. The base didn’t believe it anyway. They knew he was going to get the money other ways.”

Trump says Mexico will pay in "other ways" or, recently, through the tariffs and they are happy to believe that.

Its also funny in 2015 President Obama was asking for 250 million for border security , and the Republican Congress wouldn't do it then, yet now want to claim its a crisis. In order of seriousness, looking at our problems right now, he is problem #1. After him,

Climate change (food security/water security/ renewable energy transition)
Wealth inequality
Tax injustice
Preparing young people for future
AI replacing workforce in the future

I turned fox ‘news’ on for a minute last night. Some Mexican man killed someone so apparently that’s the biggest crisis in the country.

Never mind how many women have been killed by thier fiancées and husbands just in the last few months, all of the men being white.

Ugh. Our country has to fight this infection of ignorance and intolerance and return to critical thinking and reason!

79. So by "forced to close" presumably he's suggesting shutting down cross-border traffic

So by "forced to close" presumably he's suggesting shutting down cross-border traffic into and out of the US in the international ports of entry (San Diego to Texas). If he did, the economic costs would be significant, given the realities of US-Mexico trade and the impact such an interruption would have on the US supply chain... it would be in the tens of billions per day, at least.

Interesting numbers:

[link:http://www.ustradenumbers.com/country/mexico/|

Of course, four of the five top ports of entry for US trade with Mexico are in Texas, and the top five U.S. exports to Mexico by value are Gasoline and other POL products, motor vehicle parts, computer parts, low value shipments, and computer chips, respectively. They accounted for 26.46 percent of total exports to Mexico.

So one wonders how happy the oil industry, automobile and steel industries, technology manufacturing industry, and transportation/shipping industries - and the state of Texas, among others - would be about this decision?

The other issue, of course, is that is DJT does this, it's undeniably his decision, and he gets the blame.

Go ahead, fatso. Make our day.

US Citizens included? Husband worked for a National Insurance Company whose Data Center was in Mexico City. He flew there to help them with Tech Problems they were having.

So US Companies could not send their US Citizen employees across the border and back? Sorry, Tourists, you cannot fly to Cancun on vacation?

So now US Citizens cannot LEAVE the US???

Yes, we buy more of their stuff than they buy of ours. BIG FUCKING DEAL. It gets purchased by AMERICAN companies who PROVIDE JOBS and resell it to American consumers. I don't hear anyone going apeshit when they sell Chilean fruit at their local grocery store in February. Mexico is also our second largest export market. How much does Trump want to fuck that up by "totally closing the border"?
