Hoyer says House will not seat a North Carolina Republican amid questions about integrity of election

December 28 at 4:42 PM

Incoming House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer said Friday that Democrats next week will not seat a North Carolina Republican amid allegations of election fraud in the state's 9th Congressional District.

"Given the now well-documented election fraud that took place in NC-09, Democrats would object to any attempt by [Mark] Harris to be seated on January 3," Hoyer said in a statement to The Washington Post. "In this instance, the integrity of our democratic process outweighs concerns about the seat being vacant at the start of the new Congress."

The statement came after North Carolina dissolved its elections board Friday without certifying the results of the election, leaving the fate of the seat in doubt days ahead of the start of the new Congress.

Dallas Woodhouse, executive director of the North Carolina Republican Party, told CNN on Friday that the elections board "failed in their duty" to certify Harris and suggested that the state GOP may take legal action.

Not seating an uncertified electee would be what is called for. Him being republican doesn’t make it partisan, it just means cheating was probably involved.

Not in a long while - but it has happened. I think the last time was in the 1980s, maybe, and it was the Democrats refusing to seat a Republican. I believe it was during the Reagan years.

If there are credible questions concerning the legitimacy of an election, it seems proper to refuse to seat the candidate until such questions can be clarified.

This election has fraud oozing out of it.

He very likely cheated, and he's not certified by his own state government.

Too bad, so sad.

when we win but they control the state?

Maybe, I mean I'm not going to argue the point. But like the Nuclear option, never ever use a weapon, even when justified, that the bad guys can use back on you.

Well, whatever happens, happens.

No candidate should be seated
1- if there is clear evidence of cheating, and
2- if the state does not certify the candidate

My state has enough crappy Repubs in Congress and harming my state, so not seating Harris is a good thing for the 9th District. Just wish you could also block Virginia Foxx, my district critter.....wishful thinking on my part.

and more eyeballs on what happened. The Republics have been rather successful in defining this story as merely a regional blip in the entirety of their national operations. If the story gets more traction, more scrutiny will be placed on this particular, and from that, their election frauds in general.
