A member of parliament for Germanys far-right AfD party was severely beaten in the street in Bremen on Monday evening in what police said was probably a politically motivated attack.
Frank Magnitz, who is also the AfDs Bremen chairman, was seriously injured by three masked men who knocked him out with a piece of wood and kicked him in the head as he lay on the ground, the AfDs branch in the city said in a statement on Facebook. A passing construction worker stepped in to end the attack, the party said.
The Bremen prosecutors office and a unit of the Federal Crime Office responsible for investigating politically motivated incidents are investigating, Bremen police said.
The Bremen AfD said Mondays attack represents a black day for democracy in Germany and accused rival political parties of supporting extreme left-wing Antifa activists.

Footage appears to contradict assertions that Frank Magnitz, from Alternative für Deutschland, was beaten

German police and prosecutors have questioned some of the claims made by a rightwing populist politician who suffered an attack that left him with serious head injuries.
Police say video footage casts doubt on assertions by Frank Magnitz that he was beaten with a wooden instrument by attackers who only stopped assaulting him when two passersby intervened.
Magnitz, 66, the head of Alternative für Deutschland in the city state of Bremen, was hospitalised on Monday evening after being attacked by strangers.
The AfD claimed he had been knocked to the ground with a wooden instrument before being beaten around the head.
Jörg Meuthen, the partys federal chairman, posted a photograph on Twitter on Tuesday, showing the MP, apparently unconscious, with a deep gash to his head and a bruised face, and calling the attack an assassination attempt.
