I know PA has something similar, and, like FL, it involves a trial in the state Senate. It is usually political, but not always -- sometimes people are corrupt.

It's my understanding that the Florida governor can remove any Florida sheriff. But then the Florida Senate gets to decide whether to reinstate the sheriff, or to make the suspension permanent.

I suppose this power was given to the governor because many Southern sheriffs were (are?) corrupt.

But if they want someone out of their way, they will be the first to nail them for their incompetence. Support for each other's "stellar" reputations, despite their misdeeds is a bonding ritual.
