Theresa May suffers Commons defeat over Brexit plan B

PM will have to table alternative to her deal within three days of losing vote

Theresa May will be obliged to present MPs with a new Brexit plan within three days if her current proposal is voted down next week, after a procedural amendment to the plan’s progress through the Commons was passed amid chaotic scenes

The amendment to the business motion for the plan, drawn up by the Conservative former attorney general Dominic Grieve, gives May the deadline to put forward new plans if she loses the vote, as many expect, next Tuesday.

The amendment was passed by 308 votes to 297 following stormy scenes in which a series of Conservative MPs castigated the Speaker, John Bercow, for allowing the amendment.

Amid a series of furious points of order lasting more than an hour, a series of Conservatives argued that Commons precedent dictated that business motions could only be changed by ministers

MPs to get final say on Brexit backstop, Theresa May confirms

Theresa May has confirmed that MPs would get a final say on whether a backstop solution for the Irish border would ever be put in place, as she attempted to shore up support for her Brexit plan in the first prime minister’s questions of the year.

Speaking before the resumption of the Commons debate on her proposals, which will culminate next Tuesday in a vote postponed from December, May insisted she could reassure MPs about the backstop.

But Jeremy Corbyn, who used all his questions to focus on Brexit, urged May to rule out the possibility of a no-deal departure and said that if she lost next week’s vote she should “let the people have a real say” by calling a general election.

The Labour leader began by saying May had failed to get any further assurances from EU leaders on the backstop, the insurance policy that would prevent a hard Irish border in the event of no permanent trade deal by keeping Northern Ireland under some EU regulations for an interim period.

“Isn’t the PM bringing back exactly the same deal she admitted would be defeated four weeks ago?” he asked

AFAIK, there isn't any procedural or constitutional obstacles, but there would be a very heavy political price for any and all parties that put it through. And there's not a whole lot of time left. And even though Brexit seems to have lost majority support since the original referendum, it's still pretty close to a 50/50 split.

So there's a lot of party-over-country bullshit going on where the MPs are scrambling around trying to figure out a way to navigate the crisis while preserving their careers, instead of fixing the problem.

Some Brits want their cake, and everyone else's cake too.

Sorry.

Re-vote England.

And stop the Russian's from interfering this time.

The hard-Brexit supporters may be reckless assholes determined to cripple the UK economy for a generation (at least), but at least they are logically consistent, and have a clear view of the politics involved.

All these politicians that insist that May go back to the well over and over, when there is no such thing as a deal that is acceptable to both the EU and Parliament are wasting valuable time, and stringing people along. If May had any spine, she'd start preparing for a hard crash.
