Shutdown impasse: 8 House Republicans break with Trump on shutdown strategy, back Democrats plan to reopen Treasury without new border wall funds

In the wake of President Trumps nationally televised plea for his long-promised border wall, both he and Democratic congressional leaders are digging in Wednesday as the partial government shutdown continues with no end in sight.
House Democrats passed a bill that would reopen the Treasury Department and ensure that the Internal Revenue Service would remain funded as tax season kicks off and millions of taxpayers begin to file their returns.
Eight House Republicans voted in favor of the bill, defying the presidents pleas for unity. But the measure has no path to passage, as Trump has said he opposes any legislation that does not include funding for the border wall. The vote comes on the eve of a visit by Trump to the U.S.-Mexico border.
A meeting at the White House between Trump and congressional leaders earlier Wednesday ended quickly after Democratic leaders said they would not fund Trumps wall. The meeting represented the first face-to-face talks for both sides since last week.

(229 posts)he could care less about the wall, it was just a cambridge analytica talking point to get him elected, they came up with lock her up too. If they pass it veto proof he will just blame the turncoat republicans while he gets off the hook.

(25,771 posts)call each of the Rs that have publicly called to end the shutdown
and DEMAND that they leave the R party, change to Ind, and caucus with the Dems. They don't have to vote with the dems on anything else
I know they would be risking committee assignments, et. al., but
if they are being honest about wanting to end the shutdown, this should at least be something they would consider.
otherwise they are just posturing
Schumer will have this voted on in a heartbeat

(22,800 posts)blinks first. We Democrats are making a stand, and I don't think we're going to lose this one.

(10,437 posts)There are ways to bypass McConnel:
More frequently, a Senator forces consideration of a matter over the objection of the Majority leader by making a non-germane amendment (i.e. an amendment to pending legislation which is unrelated to the substance of what is being considered) to any bill being considered on the floor of the Senate.
either way, 13 GOP senators must deflect to hit the 60 vote level for cloture to pass

(394 posts)This is probably his way out if he doesn't get Pelosi to back down. Once enough of the GOP crosses over McConnell will be forced to allow a vote. Trump will veto, then they override and he runs around complaining about the swamp over and over again and his supporters still love him.

(15,286 posts)They saw what happened in Nov, when Dems flipped 5 seats. The map isn't gerry-mandered any longer to maximize GOP advantage.
Fitzpatrick in PA-1 barely squeaked by and is surrounded by Dem-voting Phila and its suburbs.
Mike Kelly also was nearly upset in PA-16 (NW Pa including Erie County)
Scott Perry is another GOP 51% winner in PA-10 (Lancaster-based seat)
Lloyd Smucker in PA-11 is also a possibility. Although he won fairly comfortably, he was sweating it right up until election day.
