Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez hits out at 'disgusting' media publishing fake nude image

Congresswoman says attacks were just a matter of time, adding that women in leadership face more scrutiny

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the rapidly rising star of the Democratic party, has lashed out at conservative media for its treatment of women in leadership positions after the Daily Caller published a fake photo of the politician nude in a bath-tub.
The rightwing website published the image showing a womans bare feet in the bath, under the headline: Heres the photo some people described as a nude selfie of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. In fact, the photograph had been circulating on the internet already for a month and has been shown to have been falsely ascribed to the politician by a user on a Reddit forum.
Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Twitter on Thursday night that the use of a discredited image by a prominent conservative outlet showed that women in leadership face more scrutiny. Period.
She said the actions of the Daily Caller were just a matter of time given that Republicans had been frothing at the mouth all week a phrase that she did not explain. She also criticized the Daily Mail which she accused of sending a reporter to my boyfriends relatives homes offering them cash for stories.

Maybe she should sue? That's the bow tie boy, Tucker Carlson, isn't it? Aren't his sponsors dropping him? Maybe more should.

he's the guy who VP pence blowed on radio yesterday and if any of those universities was pushed to merely discuss the stupidity of supporting those stations others would follow and advertisers would head for the hills.

(11,885 posts)Scared they are of her, or none of this would be happening now. She's a smart , and very articulate young lady that has really good new idea's , especially raising taxes on the wealthy. They're scared that idea will be very popular and may happen, and should. I like her a lot for her new idea's , and standing up against others attacking her, and don't need another person not willing to stand up to attacks by them. Hope she gets more support , she's got mine. We need more women, more minorities in OUR Congress and our government.

Even if it were a genuine picture of AOC (or part of her, I guess), so what? She's an adult who can take such pictures as much as she likes. I'd reserve my scrutiny for the person or persons who got hold of it and passed it on without her consent, if it were genuine.

(12,612 posts)Still on Reddit, but as a debunked photo. I had to go back to see what you were talking about. I sure miss out on a lot if folks can see this kind of stuff normally!! I had to really spread out the image to see it.
And youre right, its not obscene.
But this is the beginning. As the next generation starts running for office, their WHOLE LIVES have been online, unlike folks over
30-40. Just think of what we're going to see in 2030 from old FB posts or Instagram. From when the candidate was 19, now 40s and running for Senate.
If you're planning a political career, better be clean from age 12 now.

I avoid social media like the plague because I don't want my life to be accessible to every random schmo on the Internet. (12,612 posts)A "deep fake" is a video with YOUR face on it that looks real. I imagine that an expert can tell, like with photoshop, but once its out there, a TON of people will believe it TRUE.
Its being done right now with movie stars on porn star's bodies doing what porn stars do. But just imagine a candidates face on the face of someone snorting coke in a "hidden video" or some such thing as that. It could be anything.
People need to be ready for this, because the radicals are not above using it.
Google it and you'll see what I mean.

It is a racist, sexist rag founded by Tucker Carlson.
Whille politicans generallly do not sue for defamation because they need to show that the false information was made with 'actual malice', I think in this case it CAN be shown that the publication used knowingly false information with malice intent.
I don't know if she would sue or not for defamation, but I think she has a case

RW media has been out of control for a very long time. The lefts passive approach to the situation has been a major problem. Like it doesn't matter that 98% of political talk radio is conservative, or that Fox News can lie with impunity with virtually no push back.

(7,142 posts)It is an extremely important trait and it is why Republicans fear her so much. She is one of the very few who can change the corporate controlled right wing narratives. Al Franken had that ability that's why they got rid of him. Speaker Pelosi has that ability, she can call a press conference and they will come.
Why does she have to choose her battles wisely? Can't she be herself and fight for what she believes in?
She is trying to change the right wing narrative on climate change, should she back off that? She is bringing up the real problem with our economy, income inequality. Should she back off of that? Why does she need some advisors? What about the rest of the freshman class, does the same go for them?
