Why? Because Canada has made it clear that they will NOT regulate, inspect, or have anything to do with drugs that pass through Canada on the way to the US. Some of the pharmacy sites where US customers might order drugs only have a Canadian mailing address -- they're not actually in Canada, despite the deceptive advertising.

IOW, the drugs US consumers will get are NOT the same ones that Canadians get, which ARE regulated and inspected. We have already had a problem with fake drugs from Canada being discovered in the US mail in Seattle.

The REAL solution is not to add US consumers onto the Canadian system with only 1/10 of our population, trying to funnel our drugs through that country. It is for US pharmacies to be able to negotiate the same prices directly with the manufacturers as are paid by the pharmacies in Canada.

It's been a while since I heard this argument about getting drugs from Canada. The drugs that Merck or anyone else makes in India are made under the same conditions as Merck makes them here. The difference is Merck makes a bottle of pills for $10 in India, ships it to Cardinal health or whoever, they take their cut, then they ship the bottle to CVS who sells the pills for $80.

where they are carefully regulated and inspected, don't actually come from those sources. And they are not regulated or inspected in Canada or here. They are just routed here through the mail, and the consumer has no way to know if they're getting a genuine drug or a counterfeit.

Not every drug factory is created equal. Just because Merck makes some drugs in India doesn't mean that every drug that comes from India (or anywhere) and goes through Canada, is a legit drug that IS what it says it is.

For consumers in Canada, the government makes sure consumers are getting the product they're supposed to be getting. But the government has clearly stated that drugs on their way to the US could be counterfeit -- there is no assurance that they are the same product sold in Canada; and the online pharmacy might not be associated with Canada at all.

So why can't we write GOOD legislation, that links our prices for genuine Merck products with the prices in Canada, instead of a bill that makes US citizens easy marks for scammers with online sites?
