WASHINGTON (AP) House Democrats announced a sweeping investigation Monday of the pharmaceutical industrys pricing practices, jockeying for the upper hand with the Trump administration on an issue that concerns Americans across the political spectrum.
Oversight and Reform Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings said hes sent letters to 12 major drugmakers seeking detailed information and documents about pricing practices for brand-name drugs to treat diseases including cancer, diabetes, kidney failure and nerve pain.
Cummings, a Maryland Democrat, said he wants to find out why prices have increased so dramatically for some existing medications, as well as how drug companies determine the prices of newly introduced medicines. The committee also is seeking information on what the manufacturers do with revenue and what steps can be taken to reduce prescription drug costs.
Research and development efforts on groundbreaking medications have made immeasurable contributions to the health of Americans, Cummings said. But the ongoing escalation of prices by drug companies is unsustainable. The committee, which has broad jurisdiction and subpoena power, is planning to hold hearings.

(4,037 posts)There are probably as many Democrats as RePuglican politicians being fed by big pharma above and under the table. Real results of this investigation? Marginal change at best, but good luck. Fight on.

How many and how much? That seems the first answer you should research prior to predicating an entire premise on little more "probably..."

(3,741 posts)My Mom had a 1/2 brown bag of medications on automatic refill, delivered from CVS, that she never would use, nor were they ever opened. What a waste to Medicare. The Hospice folks told me that they could not accept them and could not donate them even to Third World Countries. WTF ... so we took them to the local police station to be destroyed. How about donating them to needy folks here in the USA? Better yet, why don't they fix this mess.
