Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand tells Stephen Colbert she will run for president
Source: Washington Post
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York announced Tuesday that she will run for the Democratic nomination for president in 2o20, in a campaign that is expected to lean heavily on gender issues and imagery.
She told host Stephen Colbert on CBSs Late Show that she believes she has the compassion, the courage and the fearless determination necessary.
The first thing I would do is restore whats been lost: the integrity and the compassion in this country, she said. I would bring people together to start getting things done.
Gillibrand, 52, is most well known for her efforts to combat sexual assault in the military and on college campuses, to repeal the militarys policy of dont ask, dont tell and to make it easier for Capitol Hill staffers who have been sexually harassed or assaulted to report their experiences.

"Gillibrand, 52, is most well known for her efforts to combat sexual assault in the military and on college campuses, (etc. etc.)"
Maybe in some circles this is true, but in others, she is most well known for leading the charge to get Al Franken to resign from the Senate, something for which she has not been forgiven by the many who remain sympathetic to Senator Franken.
The cry of "opportunist!" has been leveled at presidential contenders almost since there have been such animals, so she wouldn't be the first to contend with the accusation. However, with a crowded field of qualified (as opposed to the Republican circus of two and six years ago) contenders for the nomination on the Democratic side in 2020, she will need some heavy persuasion to get beyond those who will not forgive the drive to get Franken to resign. Of those who do not forgive, I admit that I am so far a charter member.

She supported the stock Democratic core issues (health care, education, ending discrimination, etc.) and, of course, said she was going to bring us together.
"Bring us together?" WOW! What an original idea! I sure wish I had thought of THAT one!
If I hadn't known who she was, I would have thought she was a Republican comedienne making fun of us.

Ask Hillary Clinton--Bernie Sanders--or Barack Obama. A sense of fairness has always seemed to permeate Dems in Iowa. None of this bodes well for another candidate who thinks their shit doesn't stink, when in reality it does. Ask Chris Dodd, Joe Biden (2008) John Edwards, Bill Richardson, Dennis Kucinich etc

(1,107 posts)She's the only Senator out of 100 who didn't vote on Russian sanctions yesterday, too busy promoting herself on Colbert.
She's changed policy positions a number of times. It makes her seem disingenuous as a Dem. For example:
In House, she had received a 100% positive rating from the National Rifle Association.
In the House, Gillibrand supported the Bush tax cuts.
Gillibrand voted against raising the US debt ceiling.
In the House, she voted twice against the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008.
Those are pretty conservative viewpoints. Then she goes to the Senate says/does whatever position will afford her some popularity.
Bottom line she'll promote Kirsten Gillibrand first and foremost. No Thanks.

After Custer led his forces into the disasterous battle at the Little Bighorn, only Custers name has been remembered by the average Joe as being at falt. None of the other soldiers names are even known to the average American.
Leaders always get the most pushback for their actions.
Gillibrand lead the charge against Franken with others (by bad judgement) following her. Combined with her statements against the Clinton's and her disturbing history with big tobacco, I and many others will not vote for her in the primaries, PERIOD!
