EXCLUSIVE: The real source of Apple device IDs leaked by Anonymous last week (Not the FBI)
Source: NBC News
A small Florida publishing company says the million-record database of Apple gadget identifiers released last week by the hacker group Anonymous was stolen from its servers two weeks ago. The admission, delivered by the companys CEO exclusively to NBC News, contradicts Anonymous' claim that the hacker group stole the data from an FBI agent's laptop in March.
Anonymous accusations garnered attention because they suggested that the FBI was using the unique gadget identifiers -- called UDIDs -- to engage in high-level spying on American citizens via their iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touch devices. The FBI denied the claim, last week, and when asked to comment for this story, referred to last weeks denial.
Paul DeHart, CEO of the Blue Toad publishing company, told NBC News that technicians at his firm downloaded the data released by Anonymous and compared it to the company's own database. The analysis found a 98 percent correlation between the two datasets.
"That's 100 percent confidence level, it's our data," DeHart said. "As soon as we found out we were involved and victimized, we approached the appropriate law enforcement officials, and we began to take steps to come forward, clear the record and take responsibility for this.

Also, what someone says in IRC or posts on a board does not an official statement make. It's remarkably easy to make anons look bad since they're anonymous. Commit a crime; blame it on anonymous. Release a statement as an anon that is later reported as false; the group looks bad. Making the PTB nervous? Flood the rooms with CP and watch anons scatter, then you can use that as an excuse to seize hard drives and put people in jail or at least ruin their lives.

(34,845 posts)Anyone can say they are part of Anonymous. Hackers who want to steal data and use it for blackmail. They are not to be admired.

(4,444 posts)It does raise questions, he said. I think people need to question what they see online, whether it comes from Anonymous or from a news organization or from a politician or from a corporation. You need to not take things at face value right away and jump straight to what you think it says. Somebody says, Oh, this came from the FBI, everybody believes it. Well, lets think about (it).

(1,712 posts)Only a 98% correlation with the stolen data, so they're 100% sure they were hacked? FAIL!!!
