Pelosi: Trump proposals to reopen government a 'non-starter'

Source: The Hill

BY TAL AXELROD - 01/19/19 03:44 PM EST

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) called reports of a deal to be proposed by President Trump to end a record-long partial government shutdown a “non-starter.”

“Democrats were hopeful that the President was finally willing to re-open government and proceed with a much-need discussion to protect the border. Unfortunately, initial reports make clear that his proposal is a compilation of several previously rejected initiatives, each of which is unacceptable and in total, do not represent a good faith effort to restore certainty to people’s lives,” she said in a statement.

“It is unlikely that any one of these provisions alone would pass the House, and taken together, they are a non-starter.”

Reports surfaced Saturday that Trump would propose a deal that would temporarily extend protections for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program recipients and introduce legislation extending the legal status of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders in exchange for his requested $5.7 billion for a border wall.

Amazing to think about how some wanted to choose someone else to be Speaker. So much hand-wringing about wanting "new blood" or "someone younger" ... basically they wanted change for the sake of change. What a short-sighted mistake that would have been! Especially NOW.

To protect them, and we demurred.

Of course, that's total bullshit, but that's how they'll spin in on FOX, and the zombie nation will nod its collective heads in entranced acceptance.

That's basically how they'll move forward with any compromise offer made to the Dems. I'm proud of our caucus for holding its ground.

Any attempt by him to go after the DACA recipients is blocked for at least a year, probably more.

That is why his offer for a temporary reprieve for DACA is nothing. We already have a temporary reprieve.

That was NOT a "proposal to open the government."

Trump said nothing about opening the government, not even at the end when he could have said, "Do all that and we'll open the government." He didn't even say that.

Frankly, if Pelosi gave in to that, Trump would probably still not open the gov't.

The nay's did not keep her out of this position. Her experience will save the day.

Of course now, tRump is going to go nuts blaming her for not taking the deal, and ending the shutdown.
