Low-key Dem senator rains hell on Ted Cruz for crying crocodile tears while refusing to end the shutdown

Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO), a normally low-key member of Congress, on Thursday lashed out at fellow Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) for refusing to open the government while crying crocodile tears about first responders not getting paid.
During a debate over a bill that would pay members of the Coast Guard without reopening the government, Bennet rose to object to Cruzs grandstanding.
I seldom rise on this floor to contradict somebody on the other side, Bennet explained. I have worked very hard over the years to work in a bipartisan way with the presiding officer with my Republican colleagues, but these crocodile tears that the senator from Texas is crying for first responders are too hard for me to take.
The Colorado senator then recalled that Cruz had triggered a government shutdown over health care in 2013 while there was flooding in his state.

(238 posts)This and other stories on DU are sourced to Raw Story. For the past three days, every time I visit Raw Story, my computer emits a loud beep, the screen goes white, and a warning appears that reads something like: 'Your computer is infected with a virus. To clean your computer, click on this link, etc., etc., etc."
At the same time, my Norton anti-virus alerts that malware is attempting to enter my computer through an infected website.
Because this has happened three times over the past three days and only when I'm on Raw Story, I'm avoiding RS.
Just one person's opinion and experience so please don't flame me, ban me, or otherwise attack.

(49,992 posts)Not because of the virus aspect, but because of the bloated adware.

(9,581 posts)That warning, complete with siren IS the virus. Don't click on anything.
Go to eset.com and run their free virus scan. They are so good, that after trying several other virus software, I bought their package. But I'm not selling, just run their free scan. Never have they failed to clean my computer.

(4,079 posts)These shutdowns are only ever political stunts, and only cause harm. The law should be that the current budget stays in effect until a new one is passed. It's not like they're going to stop collecting taxes.

(45,466 posts)because it's not even a rule, just an idiotic and terrible tradition of screwing the minority party. It's unproductive for anyone to keep mentioning "Hastert rule" as if it's a thing.
The real problem is the Senate is controlled by complete assholes. There is a turtle slowing everything down for no useful reason.

(4,291 posts)Im basking in late-January warmth here in Florida; but, knowing that my state is represented by Marco Rubio and Rick Scott in the US Senate gives me chills. Together, these two RepubliCONs dont have enough vertebrae or discs to offer a tenth of the spine that Sen. Bennet has shown here.
The option of moving to the breathtakingly beautiful and cold state of Colorado however, seems to be tantamount to throwing in the towel in a purple state that has the potential of turning blue in 2020.
Still, theres the fact that weed is legal there (not just medically, but also recreationally).
Focus! Change the system here.
Meanwhile, kudos to Sen. Bennet and Coloradans for forward-thinking!

(4,079 posts)I did like the speech.
I was a big supporter of Andrew Romanoff when he SHOULD have won that senate seat. Bennet, I have always felt, is too corporatist and too conservative. But I will say this: In the absence of any meaningful conservative party, I think it might be up to the blue dogs to argue the conservative points. We need debate, and until the GOP gets its collective head out of its ass, we're just going to have to do it for them.
Now, if we can get rid of Gardner and get a REAL democrat in office, we'll be all set .
His demolition of Ted Cruz was terrific, but...
Last year, Bennet voted (with a bunch of other sell-out corporate Dems) to de-regulate the banks, which made my blood boil.
And the more I checked Bennet's voting record, the angrier I got.
A progressive primary challenger is sorely needed here in Colorado. I'm wondering if the Justice Democrats have Bennet in their sights yet?

(36,482 posts)He isn't up for re-election until 2022 so he can afford to speak out with passion now. I've been mostly disappointed in him as our senator, although he's leaps better than that right wing shit Gardner, who we will hopefully vote out in 2020.
