NASA space center asking employees to volunteer to clean bathrooms during shutdown
Source: The Hill
At NASAs Johnson Space Center in Houston employees who are already working without pay are being asked to help clean the bathrooms as the centers custodial staff will no longer be funded after Friday.
A NASA manager posted on Twitter Thursday a sign hanging outside the bathroom asking staff to volunteer to clean the bathrooms once per week amid the ongoing partial government shutdown, as reported by The Houston Chronicle.
"This is our reality at the Johnson Space Center," Elizabeth Blome wrote. "We now have no custodial services while we work without pay to keep the International Space Station operating."
The sign asking for volunteers to clean the bathrooms also urged staff to bring their personal trash cans to a large bin because desk-side trash pickup had been suspended.
Roughly 94 percent of the 3,055 federal employees at the Johnson Space Center have been furloughed since the government shutdown began last month. There are about 200 employees still working to ensure the safety of astronauts aboard the International Space Station. The remaining working employees are not currently getting paid and are slated to miss their second paycheck Friday.

(23,354 posts)I can't feel too sorry for the NASA employees, as they will get paid eventually, so why not clean a bathroom?
Volunteers are cleaning the national parks, for no pay.
The ones that I feel for are any contracted cleaning services. They won't get paid for time missed. They won't be "made whole" on their income. And they're probably the least able to cope with losing income.
When I worked for the government (Army), I had to clean bathrooms, kitchens, none of which was part of my "occupation".

(12,633 posts)Nor did they volunteer, like citizens cleaning the parks did,
But pushing civil service employees beyond their regular duties is nothing new. I recall once when we got a bomb threat in our federal skyscraper, our office got a call telling us to dispatch a secretary to check the trash bin in the ladies restroom for anything suspicious . True story.
