TSA to Give Officers Partial Pay for Work During Government Shutdown

Source: NBC 4 New York

The Transportation Security Administration announced Friday that it will issue a partial paycheck to most employees as thousands of other federal workers are set to miss a second biweekly paycheck, marking nearly a month since they were last paid.

TSA Administrator David P. Pekoske said the agency scraped together limited funds from varying sources in order to pay a portion of their workforce.

Employees "at the I-band and below," who worked in an exempted status for any amount of time from Dec. 23 to Jan. 5 will receive 40 hours of pay "to alleviate some financial strain," the TSA said. Employees in pay bands J and above, which are senior level positions with higher pay rates, will not receive a partial payment Friday.

"Challenging times require challenging decisions. While our aim is to pay everyone for their work, during this period of lapse in funding and because of legal and financial constraints, we needed to make decisions on how best to support the workforce using the limited funds we had," the agency said in statement to NBC News. "As such, it was determined that where we could, we would provide partial pay to employees and we focused on employees in the lower pay bands to help alleviate the financial strain they may be experiencing."

about the burden on many of them even getting gas to fill the car to get to the airport. We have a commuter rail train that does go to the airport but of course that has a cost associated that many were having difficulty with or totally unable to pay. Just the past week, my own local congressman worked out a deal where our local transit authority (SEPTA) would offer free rides to TSA employees. Of course that would be contingent on them living somewhere that can connect (via bus/trolly/subway/el/train, etc) to the airport line.

My brother had serious financial troubles years ago when his wife got sick. They had insurance, but she could not work and there was no paycheck for her. My brother borrowed money from my parents to pay for his transportation to work. It was something very basic, but it helped them get through their crisis.

It's really horrible that people can be so callous and evil but here we are.

Listening to our Democratic leaders right now.

The right-wing dream is to keep the G shut down with no inconvenience to the public. My wife is furloughed and we are feeling the pain, but paying TSA agents, USCG, air traffic controllers and others who immediately effect our daily lives is a way of taking the pressure off
Trump and the Republicans. Keep their nuts in a vice and end this obscenity of a shut down!

that impacted me (I have since retired). They were cherry-picking funding to agencies or parts of agencies in order to try to sustain the closures while attempting to thwart the complaints from the public.

Is it just me who is suspicious of that phrase? WTF, come out and say where you "found" the money.

Maybe a loan from everyone's pension fund? Nah, they probably don't get pensions.
