Cuomo signs gender identity discrimination, conversion therapy bans into law

ALBANY — Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed two bills prohibiting gender identity discrimination and so-called conversion therapy into law Friday, maintaining a steady pace of liberal legislation coming out of Albany under Democratic leadership.

“This is New York at its best, and it’s New York showing two different paths at a time when this nation is scared and confused and fearful of the future,” Cuomo said at the event, held at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center in the West Village.

Colorful striped flags symbolizing the gay and transgender pride movements set the stage, but the ongoing partial federal shutdown also served as the backdrop.

“No one could make up the situation we are in — it gets worse every day,” Cuomo said, pointing to the rash of recent delayed flights at LaGuardia and elsewhere on the East Coast due to a growing shortage of aviation workers. “The good news is, in light of the federal madness, it makes what New York does even more important.”
