Trump: Northam's yearbook photo depicting men in blackface, KKK robes 'unforgivable'

President Trump blasted Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D) on Saturday after Northam apologized at a press conference hours earlier for a photo that appeared in his medical school yearbook depicting two men, one dressed in Ku Klux Klan robes and the other in blackface.
In a tweet, Trump ridiculed Northam's statements Saturday appearing to walk back his admission that he was one of the two men depicted in the photo, which the governor initially apologized for in a statement Friday evening.

In a second tweet, the president remarked that Northam's opponent in the 2017 Virginia gubernatorial race, Ed Gillespie (R), must be furious with his campaign staff for not finding the picture during the election.

Northam apologized again for the photo at a press conference Saturday afternoon while stating his belief that he is not either of the two men depicted in the image.

(218 posts)I'm so tired of this.
When the picture first came out why couldn't everyone just say-- "Wait a minute."
No, everyone had to be the first to pile on. Look, I'm not for or against Governor Northam. I'm just saying that I saw the same thing happen to Al Franken-- all because of a picture from long ago.
Maybe the next time a picture from long ago is turned up we shut our mouths and let the story get unpacked.
I still despise Kirsten Gillibrand for what she did to Al Franken-- yet the instigator was Stone.
All I'm saying is-- could we give the situation a few days before we scream, "Off with their head!" I'm so tired of this reactive politics. Aren't you?
I know, a lot of people of color are tired of prejudice. They're tired of people reacting first to their skin color before they can tell their story. We just have to do better than this.
I'm exhausted. I'm turning off the television. I'm shutting down sites. I'm going to listen to music for a few days. Because it's just too much.
Too little information, too many opinions. It's the Kristen Gillebrand-style hatchet job redux. The opinions are just "chewing the chewed" again.
And to those who think it's the most important thing ever?
Compared to what?
Perspective.

(6,556 posts)When these incidents arise, there is a rush to judgement without exploring and researching the facts. Al Franken was an example of this. During the last election, we had a similar thing happen with Keith Ellison where days before the primary there was a release of sexual abuse allegations. I am happy to say that people in Minnesota voted for Keith in the primary and investigations into the allegations were launched by the DFL and law enforcement immediately. No evidence was found to support the allegations. Keith is now our State Attorney General, and the allegations died a natural death, as they did with Al Franken once he resigned. Due process is apparently a thing of the past. People are deemed guilty by allegations and not by actual evidence. We need to approach things intellectually and not with emotions only. I don't know Northam and I don't have a horse in this race. However, Minnesota did have two horses in the rush to judgement, one lost and the second one won.

(15,286 posts)imho are both generally more forgiving and harder on themselves and each other when they don't live up to high moral standards and expectations. Again, imho, I think we want to and strive to bring out the better angels in ourselves.
Of course rw operatives like the ones who unearthed this yearbook picture count on that. Think about it, there has not been 1 Republican to condemn Northam or say he should resign. Not. One. They are laughing all the way to the bank, as it were.

"Unforgivable" , as in, "he should immediately resign".

(397 posts)that one of Trumps companies was busted for refusing to let properties to black people?
Or that he described the morons at Charlestown as 'some very fine people'
That he describes Mexicans as murderers and rapists
That he pardoned Joe Arpaio, who was essentially charged with racism
That he endorsed Roy Moore - a paedophile rapist
That he employs Stephen Miller

(6,921 posts)Those things are about Trump. This issue is about the Virginia Governor.
So, yes, forget about Trump being a moron, that is a given. Consider that the moron is saying "Northram is beyond forgiveness" and consider the source. The source is a liar.
So accommodating Trump is a side-effect of a resignation. The question is, will the side-effect do more harm than the cure?

(53,962 posts)...does anyone who read the tweet think his "unforgivable" remark was in reference to "the most horrible statement on super late term abortion" and not the photo? Notice there is no reference to what was in the photo, nor does the term "racist" appear anywhere in either tweet. It is only in the second tweet where he modifies the word "photo" with the word "terrible" and that tweet is mainly pointing out the fault of "Opposition Research Staff".

(14,175 posts)A 35 year old photo of a young man in a one time stupid (in retrospect) make up and pose? Off with his head!!!!
It doesn't matter that Trump and many Republicans are ACTUAL practicing present day racists and have been for decades.
So Trump and his racist army will scream and shout for resignation for this old photo, and they will be joined by at least half from our side. An overwhelming majority of politicians. And any who hang back are labeled Jim Crow racists. One of the few times we all come together with a purpose. To rid the country of another damn Democrat! Quickly before all the facts are gathered, even better.
