London and Moscow (CNN) - Senate investigators want to question a Moscow-based American businessman with longstanding ties to President Donald Trump after witnesses told them he could shed light on the President's commercial and personal activities in Russia dating back to the 1990s, multiple sources have told CNN.
The Senate Intelligence Committee, which is probing allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 elections, has been keen to speak with David Geovanis for several months, the sources say.
Geovanis helped organize a 1996 trip to Moscow by Trump, who was in the early stages of pursuing what would become a long-held goal of building a Trump Tower in the Russian capital, according to multiple media reports at the time.
Years later, Geovanis worked for the Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, whose ties to Trump's 2016 campaign chairman Paul Manafort have also been of interest to investigators.

(9,426 posts)to save their own traitorous hides. When the whole mess is exposed, and it WILL be, then we will fully understand how we have been betrayed by the gop for YEARS. Working class people should never vote republican. They represent only the wealthy, of any nationality. Just as long as the money is green, the gop plays along.

(10,017 posts)At least thats my hypothesis based on his business contacts and his money laundering. It took decades for the FBI to bring down some of the worst New York mafia families, and it is no coincidence that several of the FBI agents with many years experience investigating Russian mafia activities were among the first targeted and ultimately fired. As even a small fish in the international Russian mafia operations (meaning he is a lieutenant, not a boss), Trump was in a unique position to disrupt US investigations into Russian criminal operations.
The reason why everyone around Trump tells the same lies about Russia is their complicity in furthering Russian interests. They have no choice but to lie and hope for the bestlike Manafort. If the Mueller investigation does not bring Trump down, the Russia mafia will be stronger. Under Putin, what started out as money laundering from their rape of Russian wealth after the breakup of the USSR has become an international crime organization that is working to restructure governments around the world to be headed by totalitarian despots loyal to Putin.
Trump is certainly a despot, and no matter who is on the GOP ticket for president in 2020 I expect Russia to help that person win. They already know how to hack our voter registration and actual voting systems. Its a small step to flip an electionas they may have already done in 2016. If 2020 polls show a close race, its easy to hide flipped votes as the margin of error in polls. Thats why Im happy that we have so many strong candidates for 2020, but it will still be a hard race to win.

(4,035 posts)Add to the list the defunding of cyber-security appropriations. Apparently, the Exalted Orange Leader doesnt view hostile foreign sources as a threat to our elections, or in his sad case, erections.
Does his idiot even realize how stupid hes made himself look? Or, does he not care? Lets face it, hes out there in the open not hiding much of anything. His denials and the complicity of his wretched party are an insult to this country, and yet he will more than likely finish his term.

(9,688 posts)His defunding of cyber-security appropriations, especially to protect the integrity of our elections (and don't forget the ~ $100 million dollars appropriated by Congress to the State Dept in the 2017 budget, to protect against international cybersecurity attacks that, to my knowledge, was never spent), is for me the definitive proof that he has no interest in protecting our democracy.
