White House to select federal scientists to reassess government climate findings, sources say

Source: Bangor Daily News

WASHINGTON — The White House plans to create an ad hoc group of select federal scientists to reassess the government’s analysis of climate science and counter its conclusions that the continued burning of fossil fuels is harming the planet, according to three administration officials.

The National Security Council initiative would include scientists who question the severity of climate impacts and the extent to which humans contribute to the problem, according to these individuals, who asked for anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. The group would not be subject to the same level of public disclosure as a formal advisory committee.

The move would represent the Trump administration’s most forceful effort to date to challenge the scientific consensus that greenhouse gas emissions are helping drive global warming and that the world could face dire consequences unless countries curb their carbon output over the next few decades.

The idea of a new working group, which top administration officials discussed Friday in the White House Situation Room, represents a modified version of an earlier plan to establish a federal advisory panel on climate and national security. That plan — championed by William Happer, NSC’s senior director and a physicist who has challenged the idea that carbon dioxide could damage the planet — would have created an independent federal advisory committee.

take the lead IMO means this group will have little impact on the issue. More coal mines are failing, more coal users switch to cleaner alrternatives and even the DOD is taking steps to mitigate climate change.

a giant deep freeze should take over the Northern Hemisphere like "The Day After Tomorrow".

Actually, during the big dust bowl during the depression the men in DC were debating what to do and should they even try to do anything at all. There was a huge dust storm that moved across the midwest and eventually NY and DC got the dust storm too and had to take it seriously and deal with it in a responsible way.

"In March 1935 a dust storm hit Washington, DC, caused by soil erosion in the midwest in what came to be called the Dust Bowl. Washington had already experienced at least one dust storm, in May the previous year, but this storm had special timing. It hit on the day Hugh Bennett, Director of the Soil Erosion Service, testified before Congress for the need to continue funding the program, which worked to stop the erosion causing the dust storms. Washingtonians saw firsthand the impact of soil erosion as dust covered the Mall and city and Congress approved changes."

In this instance it's the 1 percent of scientists who deny climate change.

What's striking is that, as far as I can tell, not a single member of their proposed team is a climate scientist.

One of the most vocal 'scientists' who's a climate change denier has his PhD in economics.... yeah, that makes him a better expert than the climate scientists who spend their entire career studying our planet.

Instead of fighting global warming, Trump is fighting science. All the "reassessing" in the world will not make global warming go away. If we don't do something, large swaths of the planet will be uninhabitable. And all Trump is offering as a solution is to hire liars to tell us it is not happening.

Grotesque incompetence, shocking irresponsibility, clear prioritizing of personal profit over the welfare of the country. Time is of the essence if we are to have any hope of addressing climate change. The thought of the time wasted by this incompetent, willfully ignorant crew is just more than I can stand.
History will not be kind to this man and his followers - that is, if any humans survive this era even to write a history of this debacle.

At the behest of billionaire oligarchs, the drumpf administration is creating a dog-and-pony show committee staffed by junk scientists with no credibility. The final report, claiming that fossil fuels have nothing to do with any climate change, which isn't real anyway, has already been written by the oligarchs. The committee with have no public meetings of any kind nor will they engage any scientists. Fake meeting minutes will be published to give the illusion they actually met about anything. After few months, to give the illusion they actually spent any time looking at anything, the oligarch's report will be published, changing the office US position on climate change to "it is a Chinese hoax."

The end.

And anyone who follows the junk science of denial can probably guess their names (Will Happer is already on board, of course).

The playbook is well-known, and the Tobacco Institute similarly had no problem rounding up people with legitimate degrees to call into question links between smoking and disease.

"In modern usage, the term lysenkoism has become distinct from normal pseudoscience. Where pseudoscience pretends to be science, lysenkoism aims at attacking the legitimacy of science itself, usually for political reasons. It is the rejection of the universality of scientific truth, and the deliberate defamation of the scientific method to the level of politics."
