The U.S. economy expanded at a 2.9 percent pace last year, the Commerce Department reported Thursday, a strong rate but just shy of President Trumps goal of 3 percent.
Last years growth marked the fastest gain for the economy since 2015. The economy received a big boost from the largest corporate tax cut in U.S. history that went into effect last year, as well as additional government spending on the military and domestic programs. But that stimulus is widely expected to wear off later this year, causing growth to slow somewhat in 2019.

(21,635 posts)It actually fell 3.5% last quarter, making another decline in 2019 all but certain.
Sounds like Cheeto's deficits are already hurting the still-recovering sector by way of higher rates and tighter credit.
Thanks for posting these important news, Sinkingfeeling. The economy is too often ignored - but where would we be without it.

(7,403 posts)Both fell in December so there are a number of flashing lights on the economy right now. Granted, monthly numbers gyrate more than the longer term numbers but when so many point in one direction they cannot be completely ignored. Also, the 4 month moving average on initial jobless claims bottomed out last October and have been trending upward every since.
