Trudeau's Ex-Attorney General: 'Veiled Threats' Were Made to Drop Case
Source: NYT
Breaking weeks of silence, the former cabinet minister now at the center of a growing political crisis in Canada testified that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, members of his staff and senior officials used political interference and veiled threats in a campaign to get her to drop a criminal case against a major corporation.
In testimony to a House of Commons committee examining the prime ministers actions, Jody Wilson-Raybould, the former justice minister and attorney general, recalled asking Mr. Trudeau: Are you politically interfering with my role, my decision as the A.G.? I would strongly advise against it.
As she described 10 meetings, 10 conversations and a series of emails about the criminal case with senior government officials, Ms. Wilson-Raybould said that during one particularly fractious session she had thoughts of the Saturday Night Massacre, a reference to President Richard Nixons orders to Elliot Richardson, his attorney general, to fire Archibold Cox, an independent prosecutor investigating the Watergate scandal.
The often inflammatory and defiant testimony from Ms. Wilson-Raybould, who remains a Liberal member of Parliament, is likely to provide ample fuel for opposition politicians as campaigning for the general election in October gears up.

The company employs thousands of Canadians and is a vital part of the Canadian economy so what this really comes down to is a battle between the economy and morality. But because there's a federal election in the fall, the other parties - even though one of them (the Conservative Party) lobbied on behalf of SNC Lavalin -- are hitching their wagons to this "scandal" in an effort to discredit the Liberal Party.

(5,719 posts)The PMO tried to subvert the course of justice by interfering directly in the investigation and trial. If SNC is found guilty, they will not be able to bid on any Canadian government contract for 9 years. It's interesting that they are being defended when, if it was a RW government in power doing the same thing, the Liberals would be screaming for blood. No company, irregardless of political friendship, should be above the law and any political party interfering in the legal process should be held accountable.

(8,020 posts)have their day in court & let justice rule. I'm against any government, left or right, strong arming justice. Doing biz while Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi was in charge probably is the deciding factor when it comes to pursuing this case. Like its been mentioned, many multi national corps do this as many governments they deal with are corrupt but it doesn't make it right.

(748 posts)I'm a Liberal/NDP voter, generally, and I loathe the idea of the Conservative party taking control.
But we can't let this go.
The only problem is that the Conservative leader just spoke at a rally with those yellow-vest assholes in attendance. That's where we're going if they win the next election.

(5,719 posts)There's not a lot of time for the Liberal party to have a leadership race before campaigning for the general election kicks off. And Trudeau won't resign. He's still very popular in Quebec (in particular due to his stance with SNC Lavalin) and it is likely he'll weather this storm. It's going to hurt him in other provinces, though.
