WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Federal Aviation Administration said Thursday it had fined American Airlines $1 million and Delta Air Lines Inc $750,000 for violating federal rules prohibiting lengthy tarmac delays at U.S. airports.

Under most circumstances, airlines are prohibited from allowing domestic flights to remain on the tarmac for longer than three hours and international flights for more than four hours without giving passengers an opportunity to deplane.

Of the $1 million assessed to American, $450,000 was credited to the airline for compensating passengers.

Delta was credited with $450,000 for compensating customers and establishing a backup data center and an automated aircraft-parking guidance and jet-bridge positioning system, the FAA said.

I know the FAA does this over a period of time, but I was thinking about the doofus psychopath, shutting down the government and then within thirty days all hell was starting to break out at the ATC centers.....................maybe it should be taken out of the operating budget of the white house........................somewhere in there he was also part of the delay problem.....................

and for NO apparent reason. We couldn't do anything and were hostages. I was flying with my new dog, who I was going to let out between flights, peed in her carry on bag eventually.

I use to work in aviation and I remember that when the planes were going out for departure, they would release the brakes (because of the 15 minute rule and it started the pilot /crew times for work time mandated by the FAA), for on time arrival and departure, then if there was a ATC delay, traffic, weather and such, they would just sit there..................
