North Korea's foreign minister says country seeks only partial sanctions relief, contradicting Trump

HANOI President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un abruptly cut short their two-day summit Thursday amid contradictory accounts over why they were unable to reach an agreement to dismantle Pyongyangs nuclear weapons.
Talks collapsed unexpectedly amid a disagreement about economic sanctions, with the two leaders and their delegations departing their meeting site in Vietnams capital without sitting for a planned lunch or participating in a scheduled signing ceremony.
Kim said he was prepared in principle to denuclearize, and Trump said an agreement was ready to sign. But Trump said the main impediment to a deal was Kims requirement that the United States lift all economic sanctions on North Korea in exchange for the closure of only one nuclear facility, which still would have left Pyongyang with a large arsenal of missiles and warheads.
We had some options, but at this time we decided not to do any of the options, Trump said. He added, Sometimes you have to walk, and this was just one of those times.

(3,299 posts)It is totally inconsistent with the prior approach of North Korea for them to demand all at once. It has been the US position to seek it all, the so called one bundle approach. The Bolton is well known for the "Libyan approach." The approach from the other side has been a step by step, reciprocal process, to build trust. When the US wanted a summit, they implied they could go step by step, and appeared to be flexible.
It's obvious they threw Biegun's work preparing for the summit overboard and retreated to the Bolton/Pompeo hard line of all or nothing on sanctions to appease critics at home. 5/11 may have been too much. They should have offered less. Kumgansan and Kaseong maybe would have been enough, I think. They probably offered nothing.

(19,861 posts)what denuclearization meant. Why do you go to a summit and not already have a basic agreement between the parties in place. What a farce
