Melania Trump celebrates the influence of women at awards ceremony

Melania Trump is applauding the record number of female lawmakers in Washington.
“We now have more women in Congress than any other time in our nation’s history,” Trump said during remarks Thursday at the International Women of Courage ceremony at the State Department. There are 127 women in the 116th Congress — a historic number.
But the women serving in the House and Senate are overwhelmingly Democratic — just 21 women lawmakers are Republicans.
Trump, 48, has participated in the event — which honors “women around the globe who have demonstrated exceptional courage and leadership” — for the past three years. Trump also launched her Be Best children’s wellness initiative last year.
There was some controversy ahead of this year’s ceremony, after a Finnish journalist said her invitation to be honored at the event was rescinded because of her criticism of the Trump administration.
The agency that had invited the reporter reportedly called it a “regrettable error.”
