U.S. Cancels Journalist's Award Over Her Criticism of Trump

Jessikka Aro was to receive a Women of Courage prize. Then officials read her Twitter feed.

Jessikka Aro, a Finnish investigative journalist, has faced down death threats and harassment over her work exposing Russias propaganda machine long before the 2016 U.S. presidential elections. In January, the U.S. State Department took notice, telling Aro she would be honored with the prestigious International Women of Courage Award, to be presented in Washington by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
Weeks later, the State Department rescinded the award offer. A State Department spokesperson said it was due to a regrettable error, but Aro and U.S. officials familiar with the internal deliberations tell a different story. They say the department revoked her award after U.S. officials went through Aros social media posts and found she had also frequently criticized President Donald Trump.

The State Department rescinded a prestigious award to a Finnish investigative journalist after U.S. officials combed through her social media posts and found she frequently criticized President Donald Trump.
Journalist Jessikka Aro has faced death threats and harassment after exposing Russias propaganda machine well before the 2016 presidential election, and the U.S. State Department decided to present her with the International Women of Courage Award, reported Foreign Policy.
Aro was told Secretary of State Mike Pompeo would present her with the award in Washington, D.C., but weeks later the offer was rescinded due to what a department spokesman called a regrettable error.
. . .
It created a shitstorm of getting her unceremoniously kicked off the list, said one U.S. diplomatic source. I think it was absolutely the wrong decision on so many levels (and) had nothing to do with her work.

Actually, I take that back. General Garcia was funny. Trump isn't.

(2,692 posts)And it would be a very good thing for the country as well as for its needed public repudiation of a criminal usurper who favored Putin and other murderous dictators over American institutions and citizens.
Would a Democratic President do it, though? Give the much deserved award to a courageous journalist? Or would she be counseled against it for fear of hurting the feelings of the Trump Rump Kissing Party of snowflakes. God, I hope we get the power back and never forget the deals all of the GOP, Federal, State, and local, made with treason.
(Incidentally, regarding Pence and the possibility he could take over from a resigned-in-utter-disgrace Trump: Agnew was forced out of office under an agreement that, if he quit voluntarily, he wouldn't be tried, convicted, and imprisoned for his sleazy crimes while in office. Prosecutors wanted to make sure he left before Nixon to preclude an Agnew presidency. The result was Jerry Ford, a decent, bright, experienced man who was talked into pardoning Nixon by Nixon associates and family members who pleaded that Nixon's health was deteriorating rapidly and he would likely die if forced to face trial. And they knew what they were talking about because Nixon actually did die after leaving office -- although he "lingered" for almost exactly 20 years before doing so.
Poor Jerry acted -- I really believe -- out of compassion for a man he didn't particularly admire. It cost him the presidency and all but gave it to Jimmy Carter. Such is the political life!)
(Where was I? Oh, that's right, Pence. Our only hope is that Mueller has surfaced high crimes and/or misdemeanors by him as the incompetent governor of Indiana and/or as V.P. for Trump. Wish I had a god to pray to!)

Russias parliament has approved a controversial law that allows courts to jail people for online disrespect of government or state officials, including the president, Vladimir Putin.
The law, which critics say is reminiscent of Soviet-era legislation used to target political dissidents, stipulates fines of up to 100,000 roubles (£1,155) for indecent online posts that demonstrate a blatant disrespect for society, the country, Russias official state symbols, the constitution, or the authorities.
Repeat offenders can be hit with fines of up to twice this sum, or 15 days behind bars.
