Florida lawmakers advance bill requiring high schools to offer Bible class
Source: The Hill
A bill in Florida that would require public high schools to have a class teaching the Bible advanced through its first subcommittee.
If the bill passes through the legislature, all public high schools in Florida would have to offer the class as an elective, not a requirement, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
While the bill advanced, members of the House PreK-12 Quality subcommittee voiced their concerns about the controversial piece of legislation, specifically questioning whether the bill would follow its section title, An objective study of religion.
I dont know how you can have religious neutrality if your course is focused on just one holy book, state Rep. Anna Eskamani (D) said during the bills first hearing.

On the bright side, nothing will make kids hate the Bible more than being forced to study it in school.

(7,398 posts)others, even as an elective, seems to be a clear violation of the separation of church and state.
We can expect a lot of indignant outrage from Christians if this thing passes, then some Muslim student files suit seeking an elective Koran class.
From a practical standpoint, Florida has a lot of teachers leaving for other states already. Adding ridiculous courses such as these further dilutes the pool of teachers available. Besides, shouldn't the teachers be at the gun range? I'm so tired of these politicians promoting this crap.

(15,036 posts)everything they are taught, to get to the nub of the matter and not simply accept without reason whatever is presented to them. They could pair it with a second semester on the Bible as literature, so that inquisitive students can learn where and how such ancient tales have come down to us and what influences have been at play through the centuries.
I have no problems with academic classes that deal dispassionately with critical issues. And no issue with furthering everyone's knowledge and understanding of the forces that have formed our society. Why, without an understanding of the Reformation and the impact of Gutenberg's Bible, a full appreciation of the intellectual roots of the American Revolution is impossible.

(16,846 posts)Most high school teachers would probably have a hard time covering the subject with the attention it would demand. It would make an interesting elective AP class. My only problem with this law is making it a required elective. A lot of school districts wouldn't have someone with the time and the ability to teach the class.

(51,571 posts)And appears to have deeply influenced all three. Unfortunately two of the nicest traits of Zoroastrianism, protecting the environment and not trying to convert others, was not copied by those three religions as a tenet.
As Freddie Mercury's father always told him, invoking the Zoroastrian mantra: "Good thoughts, good words, good deeds."
Alas, these Florida educators don't know jack shit about that, nor the 1st Amendment's separation of church and state.

(38,434 posts)This is against the 1st Amendment to the Constitution.. All public high schools should not have to offer this
....It will go into the court system, and public money will not be allowed to fund a course in bible studies in public education...even if it is an elective..Why?
A teacher must be hired to teach this, and funds must be allocated to fund the teacher and the text books..This is clearly illegal, and will not get past the various courts. Teaching, "The Bible" in public schools will be declared illegal by all courts that the issue is taken to. A clear waste of money. Spending any time at all advancing this idiotic law is a waste of time as well as money. I could go on, but what is the use? This will be declared illegal pretty quickly.
And I might add that the funds needed to defend this in court by the State of Florida will not be "cheap." So the whole thing is "totally idiotic." The people proposing this are "idiots" I don't think it will pass the legislature. If it passes, then the entire state will be known as idiots..
But, it will not pass..A few people in the legislature are that stupid..but not enough to pass this sh*t. At least this is my opinion.. We will see.
