Former President Jimmy Carter, who once brokered a deal with North Korean leader Kim Jong Uns grandfather, is offering his services to the Trump administration to help push negotiations forward.
According to a Thursday Politico report, Carter (age 94) no longer travels, but told Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) that he would make the trek if President Donald Trump asked him.
In 1994, Carter met with Kim Il Sung and the two leaders hammered out a detailed plan to work towards peace and denuclearization. He is the only American President to have such success with North Korean leadership. Per Politico, Robert Malley, a conflict specialist who worked under President Barack Obama, also has offered his services.
Trump seems unlikely to take either men up on their offers. In recent days, Trumps attempt to negotiate with Kim fell apart at the Hanoi summit, and South Korea is now reporting unusual activity at North Korean nuclear missile bases.

(55,445 posts)What they want is international legitimacy and recognition, which Trump has given them in spades

(4,787 posts)Given that the same things remain at issue, not to mention their abysmal human rights practices, what did that meeting accomplish?

(4,341 posts)The next Democratic President, in 2020, will deal with it. I don't think there is any real urgency to try to get a negotiation with NK at this time, Kim Jun Un has accomplished, for now, what he set out to do, which is to crap on the face of the orange buffoon, so he is fine for now. We don't need Jimmy Carter getting in the way at this time, lets leave it for the next Democratic administration, they will know how to deal with it.

(1,773 posts)Carter is a great man with compassion and intelligence, but the man he'd be helping to broker the deal for is not. Trump will only squander whatever progress Carter makes with his childish posturing and gross incompetence.
All the props in the world to Carter for trying, and for looking far more presidential than the idiot currently in the WH ever could.

(1,414 posts)Please don't. N. Korea is not a threat to America. trump is! I see no reason for you to legitimize that son-of-a-bitch by offering to help in his failings. Please continue to focus on the good work you are doing here in America.

(206,072 posts)And because of his expertise as a nuclear physicist - and a diplomat - he was the ideal negotiator. That agreement was successfully continued under Kim Jong-il and Secretary of State Madeline Albright - in fact, when George Bush* was selected in 2000, Kim Jong-il asked if he could continue dealing with Albright. It continued until 2002 when Bush* violated the terms when he included North Korea in his "Axis of Evil" and relations have deteriorated ever since. Calling on Jimmy Carter again would be the smartest thing Trump could do - need I say more??

(23,369 posts)Kim Jung Un is maybe the only world leader less trustworthy than Trump. He will never abide by the terms of any agreement. Egads, I think I may be in agreement with John Bolton on this.

(1,279 posts)Unfortunately, Kim knows that Trump would not accept any deal they made. Maybe with a Democrat in the WH they could meet by teleconference and work something out. I am not afraid that Kim will start a war. but it would be good if we could help his people.
