Anthony Comello, a Staten Island 24-year-old, was identified as the suspect in custody in one of New York’s biggest homicide cases: The murder of Frank Cali, the reputed boss of the powerful Gambino crime family.

It was the first whacking of a New York crime family boss since 1985, when Paul Castellano was assassinated on the orders of the dapper don, John Gotti, in an intra-family power struggle. However, multiple news reports now say that New York police don’t suspect the murder was related to the mob. In some ways, the murder never bore the hallmarks of a mob hit. Mobsters generally don’t murder other mobsters near family, as happened here, and there’s usually more than one assassin.

The suspect was taken into custody in New Jersey. A PIX11 reporter, Myles Miller, broke the news that the accused shooter is named Anthony Comello. Cosa Nostra News reported through sources that Comello may have heard voices that night “to the extent that he ‘asked’ President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence for permission to kill the Gambino acting boss.” Authorities have not confirmed that account.

NBC New York reported that authorities are exploring a theory that the suspect “wanted to date one of the mob boss’s relatives and Cali told him to back off.” Daily Beast also reported that the murder “could have been the result of a personal spat involving a woman.” The New York Times reported that investigators were looking into whether the shooter had been instructed not to date Cali’s daughter, but stressed the investigation was in the early stages when it comes to definitively ruling out a mob tie. Daily Beast said the woman was Cali’s niece.

......Soprano was depressed that the Mob moment had passed.

That might be relatively 'good news', if it can be proven. But unless he confessed upon being arrested - he now has a lawyer - I don't know how they would know that he killed him for that reason.

It's also possible that the police had 'sources' let that out in the short term, as a preventative measure. There had been earlier observations in the press about Cali's murder coming not that long after the release of Gene Gotti, John's brother, from prison late last year.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The recent killing of reputed Gambino boss Francesco (Franky Boy) Cali brought back chilling memories of an old New York, where mob disputes were frequently regulated on the streets.

Now, more than 30 years after the last assassination of a boss in the city, Cali’s murder outside his Hilltop Terrace home Wednesday night could mark the beginning of “a new bloodshed,” warned Christian Cipollini, organized crime historian and author.

“This is not common [anymore],” Cipollini said. “It could be an internal strike or the beginning of a mob war.”

Retaliation, he said, is very possible.

“Going by history, this is not gonna be the last one,” he said.

While the NYPD continues to investigate the motive and has not yet deemed the killing to be mob related, experts say uncertainty in the Mafia on both sides of the Atlantic could have played a role.
