Era of Big NASA Space Telescopes May Be Ending

Source: Space.com

The $8.9 billion James Webb Space Telescope may be the last big-budget observatory that NASA launches for a while.

The White House's proposed 2020 budget cancels the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST), a $3.2 billion space mission viewed as a linchpin of astrophysics research through the 2020s and beyond.

And that budget keeps NASA's astrophysics funding so low over the coming years that the agency won't be able to develop another ambitious, big-ticket "flagship" observatory for the foreseeable future, experts say.

This is what happens when you have ignorant people in charge who have no curiosity about the world around them.

Fortunately there are other countries that will continue scientific research, long after all the labs in America are shut down by the Republicans.

Representatives Paul D. Tonko (D-NY) and Senator Brian Schatz (D-HI) have introduced the Scientific Integrity Act (H.R. 1709 and S. 775, respectively), to protect scientists and their work from political corruption.

If you want to support this legislation you can call (202) 224-3121 with your zip code to be connected to your elected officials. Or you can visit https://centerforinquiry.org/alerts/tell-congress-to-suppor-the-scientific-integrity-act/

When he was told, "No," he asked, "What if I give you unlimited funds?"

It's not about the science to him, it's all about his ego.

I'd be in favor of sending a man to Mars by 2020 if Trump were the only passenger in an interplanetary spacecraft that was developed in less than three years.

there is all kinds of terrible crap in that proposed budget which will never pass the House, under ANY conceivable circumstance, and MOST inconceivable ones.

It just remains to be seen a) what the House wants to do with NASA's budget, and b) how much McConnell is willing to fight about it.

Obama, G.W. Bush and Clinton never did in their collective 24 years in office. I don't believe GHW Bush, Reagan, Carter, Ford or Nixon did either.
