Helicopters sent to rescue 1,300 passengers from cruise ship off Norway
Source: CNN
Rescuers are scrambling to rescue about 1,300 passengers and crew from a cruise ship off Norway that suffered an engine failure, emergency officials said Saturday.
The Viking Sky ship sent a distress signal Saturday due to "engine problems in bad weather," said Borghild Eldoen, a spokeswoman for the Joint Rescue Centre for Southern Norway.
The vessel is in rough seas in the Hustadvika area on the western coast of Norway and rescuers are facing waves of about 6-8 meters (roughly 19-26 feet) high, she said.
Helicopters airlifted passengers and crew members one by one Saturday and the process could continue overnight and through Sunday.

(4,443 posts)Are they in danger of sinking?
One would think that the danger of trying to remove passengers by helicopter in such conditions is incredibly dangerous as well.
Hope they can either fix the engines, or otherwise stay safe until the weather calms.

I'd be a psychological mess if I were there.

(11,346 posts)Ive raised him alone and this is the first time we've been away from each other. This week has been one of the roughest times of my life. Not only do I miss him, i worry.
Even though he is to be back tomorrow, this story is bound to provide me with yet another sleepless night this week.
On a side note:. Hes 15 and worked last summer to save money for this trip. I could never afford to send him. Im proud of my kid. And I'm a basket case....
Hang in there!

I thought about not letting him go, but this was a lifetime experience that I could never afford for him. He's a good kid and I trust him to behave and follow the rules.
Im encouraging him to go off to college and get out of this small town. It's going to give me empty nest syndrome like crazy, but I just want what's best for him.
I can't wait to hear him talk about it and show me pics when he gets home! They were going scuba diving in Harvest Caye sometime this week. He must be having a blast!

(36,949 posts)So many helicopter trips, hovering, rough weather (wind as well).
Ship has no control.
Heavy odds on a mishap. Not a good situation.

(4,443 posts)Only going 3.5 knots, but it is moving, it appears to be under its own power, and there is a tug boat nearby. Just saw this all on a maritime tracking app I have.

They don't want anyone injured or killed, as it Sounds like they may be worried about capsizing, most modern cruise ships are many stories tall and one rogue wave could be a disaster
